This process is no different to wen you upgraded from 2017 to 2019.  You absolutely lose your 2019 licence, as you lost your 2017 licence (if you upgraded), but you can still work with 2019 on the same computer.  Process is this:

1. deactivate 2019
2. process the upgrade in your account
3. install and licence 2021
4. when you start 2019 it will work by virtue of you having a licenced 2021.  No need to enter a licence key.

This will not work if you want to run 2019 on one computer and 2021 on the other.  For this you need to purchase a new licence for 2021 and don't upgrade your 2019 version.

Thanks for your answer! However, in the installation guide for 2021, I cannot find any information about having to deactivate Studio 2019 before installing/upgrading to 2021? Could you please explain exactly what you mean when you say "deactivate 2019"? And is this a necessary step?

You can leave it activated in the product if you wish.  But unless you have it running on a different computer there is absolutely no need because licensing 2021 will allow 2019 to work.

You will have to process the upgrade in your account and in there you will lose the 2019 licence altogether.

Aha, ok, but if I have to buy a new computer at some point (or two, as I have the Plus license and use Studio on desktop and laptop), I will not be able to use Studio 2019 on that new computer, regardless of whether I had deactivated the 2019 license? Or would possibly buying a new computer be a reason for deactivating 2019 now, before installing 2021, if that means I could actually activate 2019 again on the new computer? Is that even possible as the 2021 license upgrade seems to remove the 2019 license? Is that fact not an automatic deactivation of the 2019 license in itself?

I think you're over complicating this.  If you upgrade you are essentially turning in your old licence and getting a new one in return.  To make the transition easier we allow 2019 to be used alongside 2021 on the same computer.  If you have the plus licence then you could have 2019 and 2021 running together on each machine.

What you cannot do is run 2019 on its own without a licenced copy of 2021 being installed on the same machine. If you want that you need to purchase an additional licence, not upgrade.
