Open file automatically with Studio 2021

Dear all,

Since I have installed Studio 2021, which perfectly works when I'm in it, I have an issue: when I want to open any file with sdl extension (.sdlxliff, sdltb, sdlproj, sdlppx...) by double clicking on the file icon, an installation wizard opens up.

I am forced to open it from into Studio, which is not as convenient in some cases.

I hope my description is clear enough so you may find a way to help me.

Kind regards,

Chloé Delhom

  • Why do you want to open sdlxliff files by double click? These files belong to projects and these projects must already be registered in your Studio. When a project is created, you shall NEVER open the files from within the project by double click, because you then force Studio to create a new project with this file. To continue working, go instead to Projects view, activate the corresponding project, go to Files view and open the file(s) from there. Other working method is really not efficient and not to be recommended.

  • Hi Jerzy,

Thank you for your prompt and detailed answer.

I did not know that double clicking on an xliff file created another project. I did not have this problem with Studio 2017.

When my client sends me and XLIFF, the "add file" option does not work to add it to an existing project, and it is not convenient to have a project for each single XLIFF received by this client. Do you know why?

  • In any version of Studio opening a single file (in any possible way) has ALWAYS created a new project. This is how Studio works.

Why shall the "add file" option not work? You can add any kind of Studio editable file including SDLXLIFF to an existing project. But I do not see, why having a project for every single file shall be not convenient? A customer job equals a Studio project in my case. In case your customer is sending you small files on regular basis, you can also create a monthly project and add the files to this project subsequently.

Either way, Studio is a project tool. Every file opened in Studio via "Translate single file" or with drag&drop will create a new project. This will happen, even if you double click a file and it opens in Studio. As soon you save this file, a project is created. There is no other way to work with Studio. For this reason I always recommend the project approach and never the "translate single file" approach.

  • Yes, I do prefer the project approach too, to have all files for the same client in the same monthly project. But recently I've had issues adding an SDXLIFF to an existing project (although it sometimes work, so I don't know where this problem comes from).

    I'll try again next time.

    Thanks for your time.
