Trados Studio 2017 FL Plus to 2021 FL Plus - Upgrade

Hallo, I purchased the upgrade mentioned in the subject and I need support with the following issue: my license of version 2017 is installed on an old notebook. Now I want to install version 2021 on a newly purchased desktop and I do not know if I only need to download the upgrade and install it on the new PC or whether version 2021 must run on top of version 2017. In other terms: shall I uninstall 2017 from the old notebook and install it on the new desktop before installing version 2021?

Please note that my version 2017 is the result of a series of upgrades that are going on since the year 2007 (thus: from SDLX 2007 to Studio 2009 to Studio 2014 FL Plus to Studio 2015 FL Plus (with free upgrade to Studio 2017).

Can you please explain what is the right procedure to follow? Shall I 1) deactivate license on old notebook 2) uninstall 2017 from old notebook - 3) install 2017 on new pc 4) download 2021 on new pc 5) activate license of 2021 on new pc?

I am planning to upgrade my notebook on a hardware level, thus I will uninstall all programs (including Trados Studio) anyway, but I actually do not know whether I have to transfer version 2017 on the new PC before installing 2021.

Moreover, can you please tell me whether my FL Plus version enables me to install and run Trados Studio on two machines simultaneously?

I hope I explained my doubts clearly. Thank you for any help I may receive.

    No.

Can you please explain what is the right procedure to follow?
    1. Download 2021 from your account
    2. Install 2021
    3. Activate 2021

If you purchased an upgrade to 2021 then you are going to lose the ability to install and licence 2017 again.  If you have purchased a new licence for 2021 and not upgraded then you can install and licence 2017 whenever you like.

I believe you upgraded. So based on this you should do the following:

    1. Before you process the 2021 upgrade in your account you should:
      1. deactivate your 2017 licence from your notebook
      2. uninstall all your programs and upgrade your hardware
      3. install Studio 2017 and activate it
    2. After this you can process your upgrade in your account so that your 2021 licence becomes available to you.
      1. when you do this you will lose access to your 2017 licence forever because you have essentially traded it in for 2021
      2. the installation of 2017 you just carried out will continue to work for as long as everything is running fine, or until you deactivate it inside Studio
    3. Now install 2021 on any machine you like and activate it

I hope that all makes sense?

Moreover, can you please tell me whether my FL Plus version enables me to install and run Trados Studio on two machines simultaneously?

    Yes it does.

  • Hallo Paul,

thank you for your quick feedback. As far as I understand, I can download and install version 2021 on the new desktop but I cannot do it until I upgrade the hardware of my old notebook. I was planning to do it at least by the end of next month, but at present I am in need to work with the new machine. What happens if I deactivate the licence of 2017 on the old notebook, uninstall Studio, generate the new licence, install 2021 on the new desktop, then in a month's time upgrade my hardware of the old notebook and finally install 2021 on the notebook, as well? (Jumping the step of reinstalling 2017 you cited in your kind answer)? Is this feasible? Sorry to bother you further...

You can of course do this. 2017 isn't needed here at all.  Most users like to retain their old version for as long as possible, and it does carry some advantages to retain the old version for as long as you can.  But if all you want is to work with 2021 then that's all you need.
