Licensing server hosted on VM and disk expansion

Hi,

Our 2021 licensing server stopped working unexpectedly.
Service was running and licenses were displayed as activated in SDL License Server Manager.

But upon requesting a license from Trados Studio a message was raised:
"An error occurred while requesting license. Click on Retry to request license again"
(translated from non-english)

License deactivation in SDL Licensing Server Manager was giving error too, and so also software reset and reinstallation did not solve the issue.
We ended up installing licensing server on another machine, asking a license reset to support.

Since License Server was working flawlessly before, we investingated changes made to the original server:

apparently, only major change emerged was that the virtual disk of the server (it's a VMware virtual machine) was expanded last week.

Could this operation have disrupted operation of the license server?

If so, is there a best practice to follow if virtual disk expansion is required?

(i.e. deactivate - expand - reactivate, or deactivate - uninstall - expand -reinstall - activate ?)

Thank you all in advance for your kind help.

Regards

  • If the operation in question changes the unique installation ID( disk ID+ Host name for the 2021 license ) it corrupts the license information.

The license information stored in the relevant license (besides the information existing in the Registry) file contains corrupt data and/or does not match anymore with the Installation ID for the computer on which you install the SDL software.

To answer your question if one of the 2 criteria ( disk ID or Host name) was changed when virtual disk on the server was expanded this corrupted the license information.

From then onwards the only possibility was to request a license reset and activate the license again.

You could have also done this on the same server but you would need to take the following actions before that:

1.Make sure the License Server Manager is closed

    2.Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SafeNet Sentinel\Sentinel RMS License Manager\WinNT\ and rename the lservrc file ( to lservrc_old ) for example

3.Navigate to C:\ProgramData\SDL\NetworkLicensingServer\ and rename the 2 folder ( to 2_old for example)

4.Start the LSM and activate the license.

For the future I do recommend that if you undertake any actions that can alter the unique installation ID on the server please deactivate the license on the server, take the relevant actions and activate it back to avoid such issues.

    Best regards,

    Bogdan
