Can you please confirm if you have processed the Upgrade from SDL Trados Studio 2019 Freelance Plus to Trados Studio 2021 Freelance Plus? If so, the 2019 version can work if you have Studio 2021 installed and activated on the same device. During the upgrade process, you exchange the old license (2019), with the new one. If you have the Freelance Plus version, then indeed you are entitled to 2 activations.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I can't remember exactly what I did when I installed Trados 2021 because it was a while ago. However, on the PC I'm talking about, Trados 2021 runs fine, but Trados 2019 is still in trial mode. Also, there are no 2019 licences in my online account, only 2021 licences.

Hello Jon,

The license for the 2019 version doesn't exist anymore after processing the upgrade, so what you are experiencing is absolutely normal:

If your SDL Trados Studio 2019 will launch in Trial mode (it will happen if you install the software for the first time on a computer) it will pick-up the licensing from Studio 2021 only after the Trial period expires. This will happen automatically and no further steps are required. The Trial version is equivalent, in terms of options and features, with a full Professional license.

As there are some incompatibilities between Studio 2019 and Studio 2021 (like the issue with the footnotes, https://gateway.rws.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0026465 ) wouldn't it make sense that users are allowed to switch easily from one version to the other keeping both licences? I can imagine freelance translators might have issues with customer working with Studio 2019 or Studio 2021.

The upgrade process itself means exchanging the license for the legacy version (e.g. Studio 2019) with the license for the latest version (e.g. Studio 2021), so in the end, you will not have 2 licenses, just 1 license (the one for the latest version). If someone wants to keep the license for the legacy version, he/she can simply purchase a new license. That's why the upgrade has a lower cost than the new license, as you're losing the license for an older version and getting instead the license for the latest version. As explained above, the older version can still work on the same device with the new version, as it will detect the license from the new version (when the trial expires).
