Sorry for the list of questions but the lack of detail or visual guide (screen print) is making this hard to answer.

1. What version of Trados Studio do you have?

2. Do you have Translation Memories and where you able to use them during translation 

3. Are you implying you can see the "Use" option to add a TM to a project?

Looking forward to a bit more guidance from you so I know how best to answer and help.
In the meantime, if you have your file open in the editor view and if you have started translating (even without a Translation Memory), dont worry.
You can always update your Translation Memory once we understand what your problem is

sdl trados studio freelance 2021 to be renewed annually. Maybe all my translation units are used up.

Also I was using translation memories up till this month. I'm only supposed to have 5000 TUs. so how can I see if I've any left?

I noted that you have the starter license. 
With the starter license, there are significant restrictions especially when it comes to TM's.

The last point I want to raise is that unlike other CAT tool solutions, we dont cap the size of TM's. So I dont know where you get this notion of " I'm only supposed to have 5000 TUs."
