Cannot access a disposed object Object name 'Ultra Toolbars Dock Area'

Hi! I'm unable to use Alt and a code for the written accents marks.   I'm now getting the message "Cannot access a disposed object Object name 'Ultra Toolbars Dock Area'". Any suggestion on how to fix this problem?  Thank you!

This is because the keyboard combinations with ALT are used for accessing the options of the ribbon and the Quick Access Toolbar and cannot therefore be used for other purposes. This is a standard in MS Office (same effect in WORD for example) and Studio is using the same technology as MS Office for the ribbon.

You can easily see this when you press the ALT key and keep it pressed: you will see letters appearing next to the various commands of the ribbon. These are the shortcuts that can be used to access these ribbon functions.

  • Hi Hector,

Walter is right. However, it should be possible to use those codes all the same. I can use ALT+(number code) without any problems in any application including Studio. Have you checked if the cursor was in the segment and if numlock was activated? You need to keep the ALT key pressed until you finish typing the number code.

    Walter,
I am a French translator working in the United States; I have recently been experiencing (intermittently though) the same problem Hector Martinez describes above. This only appeared about a month into my use of Studio (I started using Studio in May or June of this year), and now it only appears after about 30 + minutes of use of Studio. Closing the file and reopening it again allows for approximately half hour of keying in characters with Alt + Code normally, using the numeric pad. Then, abruptly, the message "Cannot access a disposed object..." reappears.
I have been using the "Alt+code" using the Numeric Pad (Num Lock engaged) to write in the French language for over thirty years now. This technique is compatible with every other environment, including Trados 7.5, Word 2007, Word 2013, memoQ, Notepad, ...everything I have tried.
You answered Hector that this is standard in MS Office. Yet, on my Windows 10 computer, I am able to use Alt / codes and the numeric pad in Excel, Word and PowerPoint, as well as everywhere else, as I have been doing for years.
Is it truly impossible to input foreign characters this way in Studio 2015? This would constitute what they call here a "Show Stopper."
This is a serious problem. I work in the US and need to use Studio on several different platforms--all using US, QWERTY keyboards of course. Do you have any suggestions? Are all future versions of Studio going to have this feature?
Thank you in advance for your constructive answer

  • Good morning Michel,

Like you, I have been using the Alt+code combination for many years and it has become second nature. I have no problems at all with it. I now use Windows 10 Pro 64 bits.

You mention only that you use the QWERTY keyboard. You need to make make sure that you have your input method set to US (international), not merely US. You do that through the control panel, under the language settings (not the keyboard settings).

Actually, if you also want to have spell-checking in other languages, you must add e.g. French as a language and select the US (international) keyboard for it. It will automatically also add the AZERTY keyboard, but you can delete that with impunity.

I have the following languages set up: Dutch, Arabic, German, English (UK) and French. Only Arabic needs to have the Arabic keyboard set up. All the other four languages have US (international) and I have deleted the QWERTZ and AZERTY keyboards. I have set Dutch as default. I only need to change languages (with is done by pressing WIN + space bar) when I need Arabic. For the other four languages I only use Dutch. Because what matters is the keyboard layout. So, I write in English, German or French with the language set to Dutch. By the very fact that the other languages are indeed installed, spell checking in those languages will work anyway, without selecting those languages. It merely depends on the language set in the document.

On older systems, it make be necessary to add a key to the register, in HKCU/Control Panel/Input Method. There, enter a key 'EnableHexNumpad', with the key set to 1. That then allows you to use the hex codes for entering characters. For example, to enter a cedille by itself (not the combination ç), type in word U+00B8, followed by (left) Alt-X. In my Windows 10 Pro 64 bits, I do not have that key, but it works anyway, out of the box. This will only work in Office documents, not in Trados, but you can create a character in Word and copy and paste it to the Studio editor.

    I hope this helps,
