My brand new laptop is experiencing massive slowdown so I will be replacing it. Please can you direct me on how to back up my SDL Trados Studio 2015 Freelance files and how to reactivate the license on a new laptop?

I have only recently bought a new laptop, upgraded to Windows 10 and installed Studio 2015 Freelance.  It seemed fine to begin with but is now experiencing inexplicable slowdown when doing very minor tasks, either in Studio or out of it.  To cut a long story short, I will be replacing my laptop but I need to know how to de-activate my license for Studio on the current laptop, back up my files, and then re-activate and re-install Studio on a new computer.

Thanks

To return your license, go to "Help - Product Activation" and return your license by clicking on "Deactivate". The license will then show up as "available" in your SDL customer account and you can use it again to activate Studio on your new laptop.

About the files: make a backup for your TMs and termbases as well as projects (you know where you stored them, as this is individual).

For the settings, you may also use the OpenExchange app "Studio Migration utility". You can find it here

  • Dear Walter,

I am searching many hours ago on a similar issue!!

    Please help me!

Now I am using MAC and also was using Bootcamp to (another partition as you know) to be able to use my SDL Trados Studio 2015 under a Windows environment, but unfortunately, I do not know what is happened as I am not able to access the windows partition and used all possible solutions and options to check errors and fix the boot to login again to windows.

The only solution now is to re-install windows, but this means loss all my files including the SDL Trados Studio installation and consequently the License.

I need a help to deactivate it to be able to use it again in the new installation.

    I need any help please.

    Best,
    Ehab
  • Unfortunately you'll not be able to deactivate in this situation AFAIK. But you can reactivate your license after having installed Studio again in Windows by going to http://kb.sdl.com and using the Solution Finder from the top menu,

If you cannot access your Windows partition anymore and therefore are not able to return your license, then you'll have to log a support case, so that SDL can "reset" your license.

In order to do this, go to  the website kb.sdl.com.

Click on the tab called "Solution Finder" on the top row and then go here:

A contact form will show on the right pane, in which you can fill in your contact data so that SDL can get in touch with you.
Also use the Chrome browser to log the case if you have it; you'll get more success in completing the form.

About your problem with Bootcamp: I suggest that instead of using Bootcamp, you buy either "Parallels" or "VmWare Fusion" and install Windows in a virtual machine. This will give you two big advantages: (1) you can use both MacOS and Windows at the same time without the need to reboot and (2)  the chances something goes with your Windows partition are very slim because you can take snapshots of the Windows VM and always restore a previous state if something goes wrong.
