SDL Trados Studio 2019 activation problem

I have SDL Trados Studio 2021 Plus Freelance license updated from 2019 Plus. I should be able to activate both 2021 and 2019 on 2 computers. It was working fine this way for a few years. Now I wanted to move one instance to a new PC. I could not deactivate it so I resetted one license. I managed to activate Studio 2021 on a new PC but I still cannot activate 2019. I get the error message "Activation failed. Could not connect to the activation server. Check the activation server address in the provider settings. - The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden. I tried to activate offline but on my SDL Account there is no option to generate an activation certificate. To resume, I have 2 PCs and I want to activate 2021 and 2019 on both. I am out of ideas. Please help.

  • Hi

You upgraded from Trados 2019 to Trados 2021, so now you own Trados 2021. Trados 2019 should work as long as it is installed on the same PC as Trados 2021, but we cannot guarantee that long term. Please note an upgrade is different from a new separate license. So if you installed and activated Trados 2021 and you install Trados 2019, it should work without an activation code. However, please note your license rights only extend upon Trados 2021, so we cannot guarantee the functioning of Trados 2019. Please also note Trados 2019 is not a supported version and has not been tested on Windows 11, in case you are using it.

For more details please see  03.2 Installing and activating Trados 2024 and Trados 2022 side by side (upgrades only) The article refers to the latest version (2024) but the same basic principles apply to using Trados 2019 and 2021 side by side.

  • Dear Elisa. Thank you for your prompt reply. Unfortunately I still need help. I installed Studio 2019 on a new PC and then I installed Studio 2021. I managed to activate Studio 2021 but not Studio 2019. So I removed Studio 2019 and installed it again hoping it will take over the activation from already installed and activated Studio 2021. But it didn't. On my SDL Account I can see 2 licenses of 2021 and a comment "With: Allow Studio 2019 - Add-on". This is true on one PC but not on the other one. The provided link does not help. What else could I do please?

  • Hi Elisa. I have some new info. Here is the current situation. I have 3 PCs. On PC1 (current) both Studio 2021 and 2019 are activated. On PC2 (new) only Studio 2021 is activated. And on PC3 (old) only Studio 2019 is activated (Studio 2021 shows License Expired message). All I need is to deactivate Studio 2019 on PC3 and activate it on PC2. I already selected Reset License option but it only allowed me to activate Studio 2021 on PC2. Could you please help?

  • Hi

There is no option to deactivate/activate Trados 2019, as this is a license you do not have. Please try and reset Trados 2021 that is activated on the PC2, then try installing Trados 2019. As already mentioned, your license rights extend only upon Trados 2021, because you upgraded. Trados 2019 is not supported anyway, so we cannot guarantee the functioning of an old unsupported version you upgraded from.

    Kind regards,

  • For those who struggle with Trados Studio 2019 activation after upgrading it to 2021 on a new PC. When you install 2019 and 2021 side by side, you can activate only 2021 while 2019 will work in the trial mode for 30 days no matter what you do. After that period it will take over the activation from 2021.
