Installation problem "Error writing to file dsofile.dll"

Hello, I've bought Trados Studio 2015 and just downloaded the installation program.
I have Trados Studio 2011 installed and want to upgrade it.
I start SDLTradosStudio2015_SR1_4961.exe but at the end, when installation shows "Installing SDL Trados Studio 2015" it ends with an error "Error writing to file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\...\dsofile.dll".
Any suggestion how to solve the problem?
Thank you!
Marcel

Let me first clarify something: the installer " SDLTradosStudio2015_SR1_4961.exe" is NOT an update to your installed Studio 2011, but a full installer for Studio 2015 SR1. You cannot update Studio to a later major version, a major version change always requires a full separate install of the new version and does not affect your existing version.
However, this should install without problems in parallel to your existing Studio 2011.
Did you try to run the installer with admin rights?
Also make sure, Studio 2011 is not running when you run the installer.
If it still does not work, I suggest, you first uninstall Studio 2011 and then try again to install Studio 2015.

    Walter.
  • Thanks, Walter!
"SDLTradosStudio2015_SR1_4961.exe" is all I can download from my SDL page.
Is there a file that upgrades installation from 2011 -> 2015? I would like to upgrade the software so it keeps my settings.
If this is not possible then I will follow your advice and uninstall 2011 first.
And, yes I tried to run the installer as admin. And my Studio 2011 was not active during installation. :)
Thanks for your help. I'll wait to the info about upgrade file and then proceed accordingly.

You cannot upgrade 2011 to 2015 as they are different versions of the product. You need to install 2015 separately.
Concerning your settings, there are not so many user-specific settings apart from the project templates. All project templates, documents, etc. are however kept in their respective folders and you can still access them if you need. There is also an Open Exchange app called "Studio Migration Utility" which you can use to transfer your projects and other settings if you want.

  • Walter,
Thank you! I will uninstall Studio 2011 and install Studio 2015 as you suggested.
Also thank you for the info about migration utility. I will use it.
Just one more question. I plan to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10.
Would it be better to upgrade OS first and then install the software?
    Thanks, Marcel

I would uninstall Studio 2011 and then upgrade Windows before installing Studio 2015 because this might also solve your "dsofile.dll" problem.

But this is not mandatory, it will work the other way round. One thing you should make sure however if you install Studio 2015 before upgrading Windows is that you do not activate it (run on the 30 days trial first) and only activate Studio after you have upgraded to Windows 10.

  • Thanks! I will uninstall Studio 2011, upgrade Win and then install Studio 2015.
    No problem at all.
I don't have trial version but regular licence. So it should work fine if I understand correctly.
Let's go to work now. :)

When you install Studio on a PC on which it has never been installed before, it will automatically run in 30 day trial mode. This applies to all versions. There is no separate installer for a "trial" or "demo" version. Every "virgin" install  will give you 30 days trial period.

  • OK, thanks for the advice. Will follow it!
