System requirements question: what exactly does "recent Intel CPU" imply?

Prospective Trados customer here.

From the FAQ regarding system requirements, it says: For optimum performance, we recommend 4 GB RAM and a recent Intel or compatible CPU.

The thing is that there are two Intel CPU lineups that are being advertised in numerous computer models. One is the Core I-series, and the other is the m-series for ultra-portables. The m-series is weaker than the I-series in benchmarks, but has better battery efficiency, while the I-series is the other way around.

What would Trados work best with? Is it better to go with a CPU that is more capable in terms of performance?

  • From personal experience: not older than 5 years, really. The best choice now would be a recent i5/i7, starting from the 4th generation (we're at the sixth generation now). I have here a laptop with i7 from the first or second generation and the speed of work is significantly slower. Depending on the task (= how big the file is and what do you do, translation or review) it may become even unworkable with this computer. A laptop with i7 4th generation is fully ok, though.
TBH I wouldn't take a m-series processor like in the new Macbook, these would be too weak in my opinion.
However, the hard drive is even more important than the processor. Better take i5 with SSD than i7 with a rotating HDD. And do not forget to chose 8 GB of RAM with a 64 bit OS.
