Thank you everyone who has answered my question about using two computers. Jerzy, your reply reply seems very comprehensive but I'm afraid its above my technological level. This is my first time with a CAT tool and my computing skills are very basic. I don't know anything about synchronization software, and on my computers the letter D: is the DVD-RAM unit. I tried basically the same as Sandy - except I emailed myself instead of using USB - but this seems to have created a second project - the initial one is a studio package, the second one is a a single file project (I saved a copy from the Editor page as I haven't found a way to copy the entire studio package). I think I will try Walter's Dropbox suggestion.

I can't return to this forum today - life sometimes interrupts work! - but again thanks to everybody for their suggestions and I will make a new post asap to (hopefully) say what has worked for me.

In which folder do you store your work?

What did you sent to yourself? The project folder including all subfolders? What did you open to get the project started on the second computer?

Please remember to do the following:

Copy the WHOLE project folder including all subfolders. Make sure the path to the TM is either within the project folder structure or exactly the same on both computers. Paste the project folder onto the second computer. Activate the project there by double clicking the *.sdlproj file, which you find in the project folder.

Do NOT use the "Open document" command to work on project files.

Thanks again for the advice Jerzy. I've tried doing as you suggest. I copied the entire project folder (containing 6 folders and the blue *.sdlproj file) to my other computer, but when I double clicked the *.sdlproj file I got "X Error. This project cannot be opened in the Studio Edition you are using. Only project packages or single documents can be opened". I bought Studio 2011 Freelance Plus about a month ago and have received one update since then.

OK, this is something I did not encounter yet and need to verfiy.

In such case open the SDLXLIFF file from the target folder, add the TM and termbase from the corresponding project folders.

This way you also will be able to translate the project.

TBH it wonders me, that Studio will not reopen an already opened project.

Maybe someone from SDL staff can comment on this...

Dear Chris,

The message you are getting indicates that your machine is thinking that your Edition is a Starter version rather than Freelance. However I can't see any indication of this in your licenses, so maybe something is technically wrong.

As a first step, I'd try deactivating and reactivating your license using Administrative rights and checking if it works then?

If not, I'd suggest you raise a Solution Finder Support Case here www.sdl.com/.../installation-and-licensing.html

And one of our Support Engineers will get in touch with you to investigate the issue.

Hello Luis, Chris Storey here. I have been trying to do as you suggest. I logged onto my account and have been watching videos about Activation and Licensing for SDL Trados Studio (deactivate offline and offline activation). Is this what you are suggesting when you say using Administrative rights? If not, how do I get to Administrative rights? In this process I have to generate an offline activation code. I already have an Activation Code from when I bought and downloaded the product (a few weeks ago). So, how do I deactivate and reactivate using Administrative rights?

The Admin rights refer to Windows 7. You must be logged as admin in your system, then you have the rights necessary.

Thanks again Jerzy. I don't have Windows 7, and when I bought Studio 2011 I wasn't informed that I needed it. I have it installed on two computers with Windows XP.

Ok, that was just a hint on admin rights. You do not need Win7 to run Studio, it works perfectly on XP.

Unless you did not manually change anything, you will have all admin rights in Win XP. Only in corporate environment your user rights might be limited. When the PC you use is your own and you have created the user name there, you are the admin.

So please follow the advice from Louis and deactivate the Studio from your PC. Then reactivate it with the proper activation code from your SDL account - provided it is not the Starter one :) If you just have the Starter edition, nothing will change though, because the Starter edition is indeed limited.

I shouldn't have the starter edition because I bought Freelance Plus. I will follow your and Luis's advice. It will have to wait a bit now, first I have to complete a translation and am running out of time, but at some stage I will try again and post my results. Thanks again to you and Luis, for those of us who are not very knowledgeable about computers it's great to have your help and support :)
