2015 + 2017 licensing scenario

Can someone at SDL like Steve or Paul comment please:

It seems that processing an upgrade from 2015 to 2017 is having variable consequences, depending on the Windows version in use.

I have seen reported (Yahoo group) that under Win 7 Ultimate the license upgrade successfully activates 2017 and allows 2015 to continue working.

However, Win 10 allows 2017 to activate by stops 2015 working.

Is this right? And if so, what about Win 7 Prof version?

I have never had upgrading problems before, and I don't want to start now.

  • Hi Simon,

Sorry about all the confusing (and indeed some misleading) information circulating in other forums.

However for now I hope this helps. (Refers to FREELANCE versions only)!

    1) The version of supported (W7/W8.1/W10) operating system has absolutely NO effect whatsoever over Studio licensing.

No one receives different license abilities based on their OS or product version! If anyone has experienced contrary behaviour please let us know and we will have a look at this for you.

    2) SDL allows (Freelance) Studio users to install the new version (when upgrading) on the same machine as their legacy version to ensure smooth migration and completion of ongoing projects.

Example Scenario applies to all versions

Translator currently owns Studio 2014 on a Windows 7 machine and purchases a Studio 2017 upgrade.

The user then goes on to install Studio 2017 on the same machine (W7) with Studio 2014, without physically deactivating Studio 2014 (in the software itself) first. This means that the user can use both 2014 and 2017 on the same machine without problem (although the 2014 license will no longer appear in your SDL account).

    So far so good-

This is now where confusion creeps in-

If the user now wants to upgrade to W10 (in effect a NEW installation) they must remember to first deactivate Studio 2017 then install the Windows 10 upgrade on their new W10 platform- then reinstall Studio 2017 on the new W10 installation and reactivate Studio 2017.

a)The Studio 2017 activation code will  NOT reactivate any previous versions and is not designed to do so.

b)Studio 2014 can no longer be activated- If you want to keep your old version you will need to consider purchasing a NEW license rather than an upgrade.

c)The above also applies to all circumstances where a software reinstall is necessary (intentional or not).

    Hope this helps.
