TXML file (wordfast TM) with SDL TRADOS 2017

Hi,

I have SDL TRADOS 2017, I have a txml file (wordfast TM) that I want to open with SDL TRADOS 2017. I´ve read in this forum that a plug-in is necessary to open this extension. I dont even know where to check that. Could somebody help? Thank you much.

  • Hi Silvia,

This file type definition is to be found in the AppStore. You can download it here free of charge:

    https://appstore.sdl.com/language/app/file-type-definition-for-wordfast-txml/247/

Make sure you download the correct one for Studio 2017. Read the notes on the download page, too.

If you have any problems installing it or getting it to work, you should be able to get help here:

    https://community.sdl.com/appsupport

    All the best

    Alison :)

  • Hi, Allison,

I thank you so much for your rely! I am new in this SDL Community, and I thought I would receive a notification if somebody replied my query. So I found your answer while I was still looking for support.

Anyway, I have read all replies related, and the problem still persists. I can’t install/add any plug in. I think I will have to unstill and reinstall the program. I dont remember if I install it as Admin.

    hope it Works after this!

    Thank you, once again,

    Regards
  • Hi ,

You should have received a notification, as this box underneath your post as you're writing it is normally ticked by default:

Have you understood how to install the plugin once you've downloaded it?

If you have downloaded it and double-clicked on it in your downloads folder to activate it, but it does not appear in your plugins menu in Studio here:

... and you have not been able to add the filetype via 'File>Options>Filetypes' as here, tick the box:

And you've done the same to any project template you may have created for use with Wordfast, then...

Could you check in this folder via Windows Explorer to see if the plugin is present:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14\Plugins\Packages\Sdl.Community.FileTypeSupport.TXML.sdlplugin

USERNAME represents your own user name folder, like 'Alison' here:

You may need first to click the box indicated here to enable hidden files and folders to be seen (you'll need also to click the dropdown arrow highlighted, to show the View Ribbon in Windows Explorer):

If the filetype is not visible in your Packages folder as above, you could copy and paste it there from your downloads folder, which by Windows default is here (or you may have assigned a different place in Windows Explorer settings):

Right-click on the plug-in, select 'Copy' then navigate to the Packages folder as in the link above, move your cursor into the Packages folder then right-click and select 'Paste'. It should then appear like this along with any other plug-ins you've added:

Then (close and) open Studio and follow the procedure I showed above to activate the filetype under File>Options (and in any project template you have created for Wordfast)...

If you have already performed all the necessary moves above to install the plugin and it is visible in the above folder, but it still isn't working, I'm sure that  will be able to come up with something that I haven't thought of.

    All the best,

    Ali :)

  • Thank you so much for your detailed explanation, Alison.

Indeed, I sent an email to Paul, following his reply to other user with same problem. He hadn’t replied yet community.sdl.com/.../54543

Well, it seems the plug in hadn’t been correctly installed. So I finally installed it and could successfully create the pjt. However, another issue came up now ;( The language pair for the .tmxl file I want to open is US (general) —which doesn’t appear in SDL TRADOS language list— into Spanish for US.  I guess this could be the reason for the error windows that pops up and doesn’t let me finish creating the project. Screenshot with error attached below. I know that AnyConnect let you revert/turn the TM language pair, but I don’t think it can be useful for this case? Do do know if I could solve this? Thank you very much! Silvia

  • Hi ,

The error message is not referring to language incompatibility. If you have English and Spanish installed in Studio (from when you selected your 5 languages) then it will recognise US English and US Spanish as they are subgroups of the English and Spanish language groups.

The message says that there is no recognisable file and that is because the filetype has not been recognised.

If you just click OK to dismiss the error message, then stay with the New Project Add files window, then click 'File Types...' here where I've highlighted:

You should be able to select the file type from the additional file types list as I described in my previous post by clicking the box I've highlighted here:

Once the above box is ticked, click 'OK' then you should be able to continue creating your project.

Try that and see if it adds the file type to the list. The New Project Wizard should then have the file listed as translatable.

I have to go out now. Let me know by posting here whether this has worked for you.

In the meantime, if  is available today he may have time to help you.

    All the best,

    Ali

  • For future reference, Silvia was able to find the solution to her problem with additional help from Paul Filkin, here:

    tmxl filetype, Wordfast

See post on previous page of this thread for the steps that lead to that solution.
