Could you provide more detail as to what you are trying to achieve here?

Studio is the default software for opening SDLXLIFF files/SDLPPX packages.

So i'm wondering why there might be a need to open the files directly in explorer.

Actually from time to time, I get translators complaining about "Error processing command line arguments", because C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio15\SDLTradosStudio.exe c:\temp\abc.sdlppx does not work.
On the other hand, many translators have two of more Studio versions installed on their machine, and in some instances it can be necessary not to use the most recent Studio version, you need to be able to select the Studio version.

They should simply get used to a fact that standard way to work with applications is to launch the APPLICATION ITSELF first.
And then use the File / Open feature in that application to open a file.

That is the only non-confusing way, ensuring that everything is done exactly as expected.

This is exactly how the software works. Thinking the other way round is naive - sorry, but it has been since I remember using a PC. Double clicking might be nice and work under certain circumstances. But to have full control on what you are doing, you really need to start the application first and then open the corresponding file(s) from within the application.
