Effective CPU power, memory speed and anything else

My name is Teruki Ito.

I am currently doing JA - EN translation jobs using Trados Studio Freelance 2021.

I am generally satisfied with my PC system, but I am planning to grade up my CPU and RAMs and Storages.

Starting up of Trados is a little annoyingly slow, even using SSD for storage.

If I were to grade up my CPU, what technical specs should I particularly check?

Single-core performance, multi-core performance, or any other benchmark factors?

Could anyone advise me from your experiences?

By the way, my current CPU is "Ryzen 5 3600."

Thank you, in advance.

  • I have no experience with AMD, only with Intel.

My current desktop PC runs i7 8700k processor with 48 GB RAM and a 512 GB M2 SSD, where all my TMs and TBs are stored. This system is still fast enough. I will be upgrading my PC next year and my next one will again have the best possible processor at the time (most probably i7 again), at least 16 GB of RAM and M2 SSD, at least 512 GB.

My laptop is the MS Surface Pro LTE with i5 and only 8 GB RAM. While RAM is not that big problem, the very small SSD with 256 GB is. It is noticeably slower than my desktop. Due to the nature of mobile CPUs and i5 is the least what one should chose. This device will be replaced this year, most probably by a MS Surface Pro 7+ with i7, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD.

Studio does not utilize multi-core, but the whole system does. So definitely your processor should be multi-core. When you go for AMD, check the performance specs, these should equal or top an Intel i5.

  • Thank you, Jerzy for your reply.

Of course, I consider cost performance, too.

I think I will select from AMD Ryzen family, and I will wait for other advises now.
