"Connection Failed" error when trying to activate OpenAI app in Trados Studio 2024

Hello, pardon me if this circumstance has been addressed before: I looked through the latest instances of related threads (some 900+) and did not see any like mine.

I just installed Trados Studio 2024 CU1 on my work computer and downloaded the OpenAI app from the RWS AppStore. I looked up the documentation for "CONFIGURATION", got an API key as instructed on this forum (https://platform.openai.com/api-keys) and selected GPT4.O model, since I have a subscription for it. I get the following error message:

Code: model_not_found
Message: The model 'gpt-4o' does not exist or you do not have access to it.

Obviously, it does exist and I do have access to it (I use it daily in my work through the Open AI interface). One curious thing is that the OpenAI app does not appear in my "Plug-ins" to activate. I thought perhaps it would appear after I completed the configuration.

Please advise and thanks in advance!

900+ ... you have been busy!  I think it's probably one of these things:

    1. you need to regenerate your API key after ensuring you have sufficient funds available in the account
    2. you need to select a higher Tier (probably not the same as working in the OpenAI UI)
    3. it's a problem with OpenAI - search for that error in the OpenAI community and you'll see what I mean: https://community.openai.com/
One curious thing is that the OpenAI app does not appear in my "Plug-ins" to activate.

Can you see "Trados Copilot - AI Assistant"?  Same thing and if you want the full story review this thread:  RE: OpenAI provider for Trados

  • Thank you for your help, Paul. If you don't mind, I have a few more questions/comments re:

    1. I have an Open AI subscription to ChapGPT4.O that I use daily, so I don't think having sufficient funds in my account to generate a valid API key is at issue. I generated three new API keys in the process of trying to configure the plug-in, and received no errors or indications that they would not work. Is it possible neither Open AI nor the plug-in would alert me about invalid keys?

    2. I'm not sure what you mean by Tier but I'm guessing it's the kind of subscription I have and what it allows me to do. If so, my current subscription was sufficient to generate API keys and use a previous version of the plug-in successfully. Is that something the developer might have changed? Am I tracking with you?

    3. I was not able to search for the error in the developer forum without signing up, but I assume others have had similar problems. Are you saying that this may be a "bug" or issue on the part of Open AI, which causes the plug-in not to work? If so, wouldn't all (or most) users of Studio 2024 be experiencing the same problem? Do I need to seek support from Open AI? (I'm sure you know that is notoriously difficult.) Or put in a ticket with RWS?

Please advise, and thanks again for all your help.

  • PS: I do see "Trados Copilot - AI Assistant" in my plug-ins. I started to read the post but was overwhelmed by the info. If it contains the solution to my problem, would you please break it down for me?

ChatGPT and the OpenAI platform you need to subscribe to are two completely different things.

    2. I'm not sure what you mean by Tier but I'm guessing it's the kind of subscription I have and what it allows me to do. If so, my current subscription was sufficient to generate API keys and use a previous version of the plug-in successfully. Is that something the developer might have changed?

The Tier is based on usage, and as more models are made available you may find that the Tiers change in order to gain access to specific models.  Notwithstanding this the Tiers are based on usage, and if you use more than your API key allows then you'll need to increase your Tier.  I suggest you read this and try to understand how it works... this is your responsibility if you wish to work with OpenAI: https://platform.openai.com/docs/guides/rate-limits?context=tier-free

The developer didn't change a thing.  Please delete your key and generate a new one if you believe you have the correct Tier.

    3. I was not able to search for the error in the developer forum without signing up, but I assume others have had similar problems.

Indeed.  But sign up!!  How else will you be able to answer your technical questions about that platform?  This isn't the place to be asking that.

If so, wouldn't all (or most) users of Studio 2024 be experiencing the same problem?

Indeed... but they are not.  Which is why I think the problem is with either the Tier you have setup, or the API key.  If you created that when you first started and subsequently changed Tiers or added payment details then the key you have won't be appropriate anymore.  The OpenAI forums explain all this very well.

Do I need to seek support from Open AI? (I'm sure you know that is notoriously difficult.) Or put in a ticket with RWS?

If you cannot solve it yourself then seek support with OpenAI.  Absolutely no point putting in a ticket with RWS as they are here to support our products and not anyone elses.

You don't have a problem.  It's only a name.  That one plugin currently contains both features.

  • Thank you for your prompt reply, Paul. Clearly, I have much to learn about how to use ChatGPT in Trados Studio 2024. It was relatively simple in a previous plug-in, provided I had a log-in with Open AI. I'm dumbfounded and a bit overwhelmed with what appears to be a new level of difficulty and learning curve. Nevertheless, I appreciate your insights.

I understand that new features can sometimes feel overwhelming.  Just to clarify, there is no integration of ChatGPT in Trados Studio, nor is it possible to add ChatGPT directly. Instead, any AI functionality relies on the OpenAI platform, which operates independently of ChatGPT itself as we have discussed earlier.
