How to split a 18000 word-file (word doc) into two or three smaller files?

Question

Hello Everyone. 
 
 I read through the post but actually did not see anything related to doc. files. 
 
 I have a word file to split and never did it before. The summary is in rich format and manually it does not keep formatting if I simply remove/cut/past sections of file. Is there a safe way to do it on SDL 2015? So translators would have only their specific smaller files and I would merge them back at the end.

personally I prefer splitting in Studio using SDLXLIFF Split and Merge (is installed with your Studio). It works reliably and enables different options for splitting - based on word count, segments etc.

In such scenarios I take a different approach: I send the entire file to all translators and we agree on the segment numbers (from - to) that each one of them translates. 
One person (in this case me for this example) is the lead translator and reviewer. Echo one translates its part. When the other translators have finished, they send me their SDLXLIFF. Then, in the project that I have and in which I translated my part, I add a temporary TM (with the "Update" checkbox untucked) in which I import these SDLXLIFFs (just two clicks). Then I run a pre-translate. This will populate the segments that have been translated by the other translators, so that my document is fully translated. If wanted/required, I can do a review on the entire document and at the end create the (full) target document. 
 
Running the "Finalize" or "Update main translation memories" task will also update my TM with all the segments of the entire document. 
 
This approach has the advantage that you avoid any problems related to splitting, you don't need to do any merging and you have the possibility to review the full document if needed.
