Strengths and weakness of using Trados (with suitable Plug-In) for subtitling?

 asked:

What are the strengths and weakness of using Trados (with suitable Plug-In) for subtitling compared to subtitling-specific software?

Or perhaps a better formulation of that question is you showed us Subtitle Edit and Trados being used? Why both?

Hi David, thank you for your question.

We use Subtitle Edit for the transcription stage and Trados Studio for the translation stage, so we are using tools specifically designed for each stage. We use this process for a number of reasons, but the primary focus is always quality. To ensure high quality and mitigate the occurrence of errors (mistranscriptions, mistranslations etc.), we generally use native linguists for each stage: for an English-to-French subtitling project, we use a native English speaker to create the master English subtitle file, then a native French linguist for translation into French.

Trados Studio is a powerful translation tool with in-depth quality assurance functionality, so we always prefer that for translation where possible. We can also leverage machine translation output to improve efficiency and existing translation memories and termbases for consistency with client terminology. I hope that answers your question, but please feel free to send any follow-up questions.
