Modifying MT Enhanced to support calls to in-house machine translation provider

Hi everyone, our company has an in-house API-based translation engine that we would like to integrate into Studio 2021. Would it be possible to modify the plug-in MT Enhanced to support calls to such a provider?

At the moment, MT Enhanced only supports calls to MS Translator and Google Translate.

Our company policy does not allow us to work external language providers. We work with highly confidential information that is not allowed to leave our systems.

Our API developer is not in a position to assess the suitability of MT Enhanced for this purpose of make the necessary modifications.

What type of IT expert(ise) would we need either to modify MT Enhanced or build our own plug-in?

Ideally, the plug-in should be able to provide
- choice of languages/lanuage directions
- responses in the Translation Results window in Studio and
- PreTranslate batch translation

Looking forward to your input and questions.

Of course it would be possible for a developer to adapt MT Enhanced to use any MT provider.  But frankly I think it would be easier to create an MT Provider specifically for the in-house solution you have.

The skilll set required is that you need to know how to code, preferably using C# in a .Net environment.  The API documention can be found at developers.rws.com as well as example code, including source code for MT Enhanced, DeepL, Amazon etc. plug-ins that the Trados AppStore team open sourced to help 3rd party developers with examples of how to tackle it.

I think, from having worked with this team since it started, that the MT Provider is probably the simplest plugin to create.

If you don’t have the necessary skills in-house then there are freelance developers we could help you with, or even our own Professional Services teams who could do this for a price.

  • Thanks Paul, that gets us a good bit further along the way. We might be getting back to Professional Services if we cannot chase up the resource internally, I've had very good experiences with them in the past with regard to GroupShare implementations.
