MenuMaker - Studio Welcome view - program launchers

Hi,

I am trying to update the MenuMaker app for Studio 2022 and 2021 (I know a bit late in the game;-)).

In earlier versions of Studio, there was a Start menu folder in %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\SDL Trados Studio 2019 Apps - application launchers put into this folder would appear inside Trados Studio's Welcome view navigation area.

But this folder is missing since Studio 2021.

My question is: Is this folder simply moved elsewhere on the file system, and if yes, where would be the correct location for application launchers? Or is this navigation bar functionality completely removed from Studio 2021 and later?

Thx

Tom

  • Hi Paul,

I am doing this on Windows 11, will check on Windows 10 tomorrow.

First of all, the Trados Studio 2021 Apps folder was not visible, neither on the Start menu itself, nor on the file system. I had to create it manually.

So, I created this folder: %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Trados Studio 2021 Apps\ and put a few launchers there:

When I start Studio 2021, the navigation bar is empty except for the default link to the appstore:

As I said, I will try again on Windows 10 tomorrow as I have a bit of time to test it, but on Windows 11 the logic seems to be broken. In fact, the folder does not even show on the Start menu:

I have noticed, that Windows 11 "normalizes" links and folders in the Start menu. If it finds the same link elsewhere, it shows it where it first found it - compare the Studio 2021 and 2022 folders in this screenshot - the links that are identical only show under Studio 2021 and not again under Studio 2022:

    Maybe that is the reason.

Anyway many thanks for your and also Daniel for his answers!

  • Hi Paul,

me again - I checked on Windows 10 and Studio 2021 and still can not see the launchers inside of Studio.

    I created this folder:

File Explorer window showing Trados Studio 2021 folder inside the Start Menu Programs directory with no visible errors.

I put a link to an executable inside:

File Explorer window showing the contents of Trados Studio 2021 Apps folder with a shortcut to 'Extract & Re-inject Embedded Objects'.

It even shows on the Start menu:

Windows Start menu displaying Trados Studio 2021 and Trados Studio 2021 Apps folders with 'Extract & Re-inject Embedded Objects' visible.

But in Studio - no avail Disappointed

Trados Studio 2021 software interface displaying the 'About Trados Studio' section with version number 16.2.12.9338 and no visible errors.

Do you have any idea what could be causing this?

    Many thanks,

    Tom

    I have no idea!

I copied the start menu item that gets aded here when I ran the installer you just provided:

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\localix.biz

    Into here:

    c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Trados Studio 2022 Apps\Extract & Re-inject Embedded Objects.lnk

Then started 2022 and I see this:

Trados Studio screenshot showing the 'Extract & Re-inject Embedded Objects' add-on with a dialog box requesting a license key.

It just all seems to work for me :-)

Maybe  has an idea as Daniel suggested?

  • Just to confirm - it still works as expected with Studio 2019:

Screenshot of Trados Studio 2019 with the 'Extract & Re-inject Embedded Objects' plugin installed, showing the 'About SDL Trados Studio' dialog box and the file path for the plugin.

And it works with Trados Studio 2021 but the folder has to be "SDL Trados Studio 2021 Apps":

Screenshot of Trados Studio 2021 with the 'Extract & Re-inject Embedded Objects' plugin installed, showing the 'About Trados Studio' dialog box and the file path for the plugin in the 'SDL Trados Studio 2021 Apps' folder.

So, problem solved I hope Slight smile

Many thanks for your help, Paul!
