XPP 9.4 on Red Hat Linux

We are planning a big leap from XPP 8.4 to 9.4. Platform requirements state "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 or later (64-bit)".

Our IT folks would prefer, with a fresh server, to install RHEL 8, pointing out that the "end of life" for RHEL 7 is in 2024. They would like an OS to be at an active support level for at least 5 years. They have an aversion to in-place OS upgrades on the Linux world which they are less familiar with (after a nightmarish 5.3 to 5.5/5.7 in-place upgrade).

Is anyone running XPP 9.3, or planning to run XPP 9.4, on Red Hat EL 8?

  • So, just to revisit this one last time, does "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 or later (64-bit)" mean we're okay with applying the "minor releases"? RHEL 7.7 has been out for 6 months, 7.8 is in beta (minor releases typically roll out every 6-12 months). Our IT folks are again pressing the issue of not wanting to start with "older" versions. 7.5 will be 2 years old in April. Depending on when we stand up a new server, IT would like to use 7.7, or 7.8 if it has been released by then.

  • Our official rules say that we will test and if it is reproducible on the officially supported platform version, we will fix the problem. If it is deemed to be a problem with the point release, it will have to be addressed on a case by case situation.

The platform requirements specify the minimum release because that is what we used for the full qualification of XPP for that release. However, we depend on RHEL compatibility for further point releases and do not specifically test each one. That being said, we keep our QA machines up to date  with updates so any additional work done has gone through the various newer point releases. I do not expect any problems, and do not believe we have had any issues over the years with RHEL as further point releases have come out. Obviously "beta 7.8" would be a no-no, but if it officially comes out when you are upgrading, its' ok.
