Where are you trying to output the page number? Probably a frill block. Go to the page layout that is used to output your page(s) and check the "Block Content (Frills only)" field.
As Pattie said, check the macro that is being called. Although I'm a little puzzled as to your error: normally, XPP states the xycode name. eg. ... name = zap (or whatever macro XPP couldn't find).
Is the error message you quote the full extent of the message? Perhaps post a few more lines above/below. That may provide additional information we can help with.
