Other than the Wish List session at the XyUser Conference, that is the only way for a request to be "heard" at SDL.

I'm curious as to what you think XPP should or might do to "make installing printing to 11x17 easier"?

The "trick" is to figure out what the printer calls the 11x17 (or 17x11) tray, and XPP provides a trays.ps file that can be used to help determine that. However, it's apparent that there just are not "standard" tray names that all printer vendors use, so that makes it impossible for XPP to provide a trays.ps file that contains all possible tray names. So there's not much choice other than a user having to reference the printer documentation.

Once you know the tray name, all that should be needed is to add that to the tray control file(s).

And then there are other possible settings in the tray control file that are needed for example for dead zones, but again there are no standard values for these and they can vary by printer and vary by tray on the same printer and even vary by the top/bottom/left/right of a tray. XPP provides the prconfig.ps file that can be used to determine the dead zone values for a particular tray.

So I'm not sure how we could make it "easier"; by definition it's somewhat of a manual process.

FYI, in Chuck's case it has become apparent that there is something "wrong" with his new printer. He is able to print fine from XPP to 11x17 paper on other printers.

Only thing I can think of for us to do would be to try to gather up a "more complete" list of possible tray names and add them to an updated version of the delivered trays.ps file.

Is that perhaps all we really need to (and can) do?

In which case we can "poll" the XyUser community for the names of printer trays that have been encountered (and not already in the trays.ps file).

Maybe we can ask the printer manufacturers to supply a working tray control file with their printer?
After all they do deliver drivers for Windows and maybe Mac and Linux, so why not a working tray control file for XPP?

(sorry could not resist to put things in perspective...personally I do not believe that there will ever be an easy solution for the problem of connecting a printer to an xpp system :-)

So would it be useful for me to run a "poll" (of the XPP/XyUser community) to ask y'all for a more complete set of tray names that you have run across with printers so that we can add all of them to an updated version of the delivered trays.ps file (which I would do as a separate thread)?
