What are the grammar checker options for Spanish?

Very often, my source documents are not in human-readable formats (such as Word). This makes it impossible to run a grammar checker after completing the translation.

Is there an effective grammar checker tool (Verification F8 option) to use in Trados 2022 for Spanish?

I have been testing MS Word, LanguageTool and Antidote but none of them worked, for different reasons.

Thank you in advance for your ideas!

  • Hi there!

I was wondering whether this was the right place to post this question Slight smile Please let me know if it does not!

I have been reading some more threads about this topic, and I could see that I am not the only one having problems with MSWord grammar checker. For me, the main issues are that it does not detect obvious mistakes and it takes extremely long to finish the scan (sometimes more than an hour).

Regarding LanguageTool, I did not manage to install it and I suspect it is about the Java setup. Is anyone else using this tool? I'd be grateful for some feedback ;)

Basically, I would like to know which tools translators are using as a grammar checker, specially for Spanish!

    Thanks a lot!

The Trados Studio forum would have been a better choice... the Elevate forum is only used while the Elevate online conference is being run.  I've moved it for you.

LanguageTool is going to be your best bet I think... or export your project for bilingual review which will get it into Word.  Then grammar check in Word and run the update from bilingual review batch task.

But on the LanguageTool... why not post into the AppStore forum with details of the problem you have encountered?  There are many users who work with this tool quite happily, and the developer is also very helpful.

To get best results from the LanguageTool I would recommend to get a paid subscription here: https://languagetool.org/de

This works without any problems for various languages. The local setup might indeed be tricky, but if you downloaded the plugin from Darek, either look at the help provided or contact Darek directly. Or post the question in the App Store forum, as Paul suggests.

And as you are using Trados Studio 2022, this PlugIn might also do the job for you. When you decide to use it, deactivate the checking during translation, as this slows TS extremly when working. You can run the grammar check after having finished the translation, this worked always well for me. However, the job done by this grammar checker is by far not that good, as Language Tool (paid subscription) can provide. For this reason I only use LT now, no Word grammar checker anymore.

  • Dear Paul,

Thanks for moving my post to the right Forum. I have to say that I posted it there because there was an automatic suggestion and I just followed it :)

Thank you for confirming that LanguageTool is the best option for grammar check in Spanish. I will bear in mind the option of sharing issues in the AppStore forum! For now, we are working on its installation and running tests.

In the meantime, we will use the bilingual review options, thanks also for this idea! I did not know it.

    Best,

    L.

  • Dear Jerzy,

Thank you very much for your answer. We will see how the installation of LanguageTool goes and will share eventual issues (and success!)

Regarding MS Grammar Tool, for us it is completely useless, even if run after the job is done. So our hope and efforts are focused in LanguageTool.

    Thanks again!

    Best,

    L.
