Microsoft net exception when trying to open and reinstall Studio and Multiterm

Microsoft .NET Framework error dialog box showing an unhandled exception in a component of the application related to a missing 'Accessibility' file.

Dear all,

This morning upon opening Studio I received the following message. "unhandled exception in a component of the application ..." The details are posted below. I cannot open Studio or Multiterm without these messages appearing. I have tried to de-install and reinstall but the removal suite of products option does not work. SDL freshstart, although installed, stops worning shortly after I choose the files to be removed. I am at my wits end. This is the last in a long line of trados problems this week and I wonder if it may be to do with a failed install of the trial version of Studio 2019 (which I cannot now completely deinstall) Any thoughts?

  • It looks as though you are trying to run Studio 2017 (always helpful to tell us what version you are using), so try a clean install... try the following.

    1. Uninstall Studio
    2. Uninstall MultiTerm

Now manually delete these folders if they are still there (back up your TMs, Termbases, AutoSuggest Dictionaries and Projects first in case you make a mistake):

    c:\ProgramData\Package Cache\SDL\SDLTradosStudio2017\
    c:\ProgramData\Package Cache\SDL\SDLMultiTermDesktop2017\
    c:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio5\
    c:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\MultiTerm14\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\MultiTerm14\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\MultiTerm14\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2017\Project Templates\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2017\Projects\projects.xml

I think that's about it for a clean install. Then reinstall.

If you still have problems after this I'd recommend you log a ticket with support so an engineer can look at this for you. This is clearly an installation problems and for licensing or installation issues that prevent you from working we have a route for all customers to get help. This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

    http://support.xl8.one

Just fill in the form and submit it. Make sure your email address is entered correctly or nobody will be able to get back in touch with you.

    Regards

    Paul

  • Dear Paul

Thanks for getting back to me. Before receiving your message, I ended up restoring my PC, i.e. deleting all the software and starting over. The reinstall of Studio 2017 (yes, sorry for not mentioning that) worked, as did the Multiterm reinstall and I am back on track (albeit 3 hours later). Good to know about your workaround though for future purposes.

    Regards

  • Hi,
I know you have solved this but it may be helpful for other readers.

The error is about a missing .net assembly so I would try to repair or reinstall the .net framework.

You need the runtimes from this page.

    https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet-framework/net472

(I linked to .net 4.7.2 as we have not officially tested with .480 yet but it will probably work ok with 4.8)

  • Hi David

Thanks, good to know for future reference. Anything to avoid a wholesale PC reset.
