Installing a new SSD disk + licence

Dear colleagues,

My laptop needs some cleaning following two overheating episodes and I would like to use this occasion to install a new disk (SSD). The technician tells me he will copy everything on the new disk (mirror mode). Was it necessary to return the licence on that machine and then reinstall Studio (2015 Freelance Plus) on the new disk and reactivate the licence? If so, I will not be able to install the new disk because the PC cleaning service is already in progress and I cannot do anything from home...

Thanks in advance for your answers.

  • Hi

I don't know if mirror mode retains license numbers or not. You'll find out when you open SDL Trados Studio. Either way it's not a problem.

If your license wasn't returned it will still show up as in use on your account.

As you have a Freelance license, you should be able to reset your own licence:

Log in to your SDL online account and go to Licences then click on 'Return Licence' as shown here:

SDL Account webpage showing the Licenses tab with an option to Return License for SDL Trados Studio 2021 Freelance.

That should be all you need to do.

If there's any problem, you can ask for your license to be reset. There is a new 'support bot' that is appearing on the screen when you're on the SDL Community Licensing and Installation page:

Button labeled 'Trados Studio Licensing Support' with an up arrow indicating additional information or functionality.

Click on the up arrow to read its functionality which includes License resets. There's a 'Type here' line you can enter request into after typing 'Hi'

Alternatively, you can request a license reset via live chat here:

    License reset

Click on the right-hand button 'Request License Reset' and fill out the little form that appears.

Someone will reply very quickly, usually immediately.

In the rare event that there is nobody available, the button will be greyed out with 'No Agents Are Available'. Then, click on the 'Submit Case' button and fill that form out, being sure to give your email address accurately so they can contact you. Remember to click 'Licensing' in the 'Case Type' dropdown. You should have your license problems resolved within 24h.

    All the best,

PS Freelance Plus does come with 2 license rights but I expect you know that, it's so you can have a copy on your PC and your laptop for example without having to release and activate each time you change from one to the other.
