SDL Trados Studio 2021 crashing

Since upgrading to SDL Trados Studio 2021 about two weeks ago (currently running 16.0.1.2917), the entire application has been crashing regularly (at least once a day) while working in the editor. There is no error message; the application window simply closes. I can then restart the app and continue working. Is this a known problem, and is there a fix? (I am running the app under Microsoft Windows 10 Home, version 10.0.19041 on an Intel Core i5-6600 CPU).

  • I recently updated to Trados Studio 2021 about a month ago.

I am also suffering frequent, spontaneous crashes while working in the Trados 2021 editor.  Sometimes it simply disappears with no error message at all or an error message that disappears so quickly I cannot get a screenshot of it.

The last time this happened, I read that if I upgrade the project TM that is included in my client's Trados package, the crashing stops. However, my customer (who uses an earlier Trados version) claim that they cannot import the upgraded the project TM when I create a return package.

As a work around if I upgrade their TM to Trados 2021 format, at the end of the project, I typically have to export the client's project TM to a tmx file, open Studio 2019, create a new project, import and convert the exported 2021 TM, then reimport and retranslate the sdlxliff file and zip them together into a "return package" for the customer.

I am wondering if there is another reason that Studio 2021 keeps crashing that doesn't involve upgrading memories or removing Studio 2019.

Help is very welcome, as I am working on another large project for this same customer and Trados 2021 continues to crash.

  • Hi David,

when I'm working on a large or unstable project, I find that turning off any 'extra' functionality that I don't use prevents these sort of crashes and also speeds Studio up, whatever the version.

For example, when I don't need Fragment Matching/Match Repair, I turn it off...

So, here in the Project settings, I do the following:

Trados Studio Project Settings window showing Match Repair options turned off to prevent crashes and speed up the software.

Or... if you don't work with projects, i.e. with 'Translate Single File', turn off the same settings under File>Options

(Individual project settings always overrule the same settings made under File>Options)

I also close the Fragment Matches window in the Editor View if I'm not using it. Most of my work as a proofreader is done in Review mode so I don't often need Fragment matches...

Additionally or instead, try turning off LookAhead via File>Options, here:

Trados Studio File Options window with LookAhead functionality turned off for a more streamlined and stable experience.

It makes sense to turn off any functionality you don't need/use because it makes software more streamlined, efficient and stable. It works for me, every time!

If the above doesn't help, it could be that the instability is caused by Studio not being installed in your current environment to the optimum, in which case, take a look at the options here:

    Repairing your installation

    All the best,
