desactivate license from crashed computer

I have 2 computers and the Trados freelance plus (2019) version. Trados is installed and activated on both computers.

1 notebook crashed. How can I desactivate the licence on the crashed notebook? But not on the other one?

  • Hello Sorin

Thank you. This will probably be helpful.

But questions still remain regarding resetting the licence:

    1) If I reset the licence from my web account (I have only 1 activation code for 2 computers), will I not deactivate Trados ALSO on the computer still working? I can imagine that the activation code is valid for both computers at the same time.

See screenshot: Screenshot of SDL Trados Studio 2019 Freelance Plus license management showing 1 user, 1 in use, 0 available, and a deactivate button.

    2. Would it be the same result as described above (1) if I reset the licence from the application itself (via the computer still working)? > Screenshot of SDL Trados Studio 2019 Freelance activation section with options to show activation code, offline deactivation, and a deactivated key icon.

I have another issue, but interconnected to the first issue:

I will dispose of the crashed computer (so I will never use it again) and replace it by a new computer PLUS replace the still working computer by a new one (so I buy 2 computers). Furthermore, I have a pending upgrade for the 2019 licence PLUS I have the 2021 upgrade still not downloaded and installed.

Wouldn't it be wiser to first make the upgrades on the (old) and still working computer (meaning that I need to reset the licence for the 2021 upgrade), activate the new licence , then install the newest version on the first new computer, then resetting the new licence in order to be able to install the Trados app on the second new computer?

This would mean I need to reset the licence 2 times and activate the licence 2 times. Is this possible without any problem? (I'm referring to the restriction "already used the Reset License option 3 times in the last 12 months")

A detailed question: Do I need to do the 2019 upgrade (SDL Trados Studio 2019 SR2 CU8) or can I skip it and directly download and install "Trados Studio 2021 SR1 CU4"?

I hope my questions are clear. Thank you for your feedback, Daniel

  • I have 2 relevant fulfillment ID: Trados Studio activation screen showing a message 'The license is not activated' with Fulfillment ID 2 details blurred out.

I probably know which computer has which ID, but i'm not 100% sure.

This means I have to make 3 resets:

    ID 2 (old crashed computer)

ID 1 (old still working computer for upgrade 2021)

ID 1 (to transfer to the second new computer)

and I probalbly have to activate the IDs 3 times in total

  • Hello

As you can see, the activations have different dates: 03-Jan and 23-Jan. If you remember on which computer you did the first activation then it`s pretty easy to know which one you need to reset. If you don`t remember I suggest to do the following:

    1. Deactivate the license from the working computer from Studio > Help > Product activation (this doesn`t mean a license reset and it will not consume one of the 3 available resets).

    2. Reactivate the license on the working computer.

    3. Once the license is reactivated the activation date will change for the working computer and you will know which activation to reset.

Regarding the upgrade to 2021, you don`t need to reset or to deactivate the license from the 2019 version. You can simply process the upgrade and leave the 2019 version activated if needed. More details in this article: https://gateway.rws.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0039975

You can skip the upgrade to SDL Trados Studio 2019 SR2 CU8, you can install directly Trados Studio 2021 SR1 CU4.

    Thank you,

    Sorin

  • Hello Sorin

Thank you very much. The points 1-3 worked perfectly.

    Regarding the upgrade to 2021:

    1. Not to reset the license from the 2019 version is against the recommendation of the installation process

Text stating 'Upgrade process: 1. Deactivate your 2019 license.'

But of course I don't do it if not needed

    2. On my SDL account I see the following:

Screenshot showing '1 Verfugbare Upgrades' with a red notification dot and a yellow arrow pointing to 'Neues Versions-Upgrade Kaufen'.

Now I refer to my old still working computer:

The available upgrade (red) refers to the SDL Trados Studio 2019 SR2 CU8 which I don't have to install according to you, but not to the Trados Studio 2021 SR1 CU4.  If I click on "buy new upgrade, then the following appears:

Message box stating 'Keine Daten - Sie haben keine Upgrades.' indicating no available upgrades.

Why? But the Trados Studio 2021 SR1 CU4 figures in the download section.

According to https://gateway.rws.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0039975 Trados Studio 2021 SR1 CU4 should appear as an upgrade (together with Trados Studio 2019 SR2 CU8). I don't understand this.

So I downloaded Trados Studio 2021 SR1 CU4 on my computer. Should I first install the 2021 version by doubleclicking SDLTradosStudio2021SR1_16.1.4.4184) and the rest comes automatically (generation of licence key etc.)? But this is against the installation process described.

Finally, I refer to my new computer which I will buy soon:

Am I assuming right that I have to install only Trados Studio 2021 SR1 CU4 (and not any other previous version) by doubleclicking SDLTradosStudio2021SR1_16.1.4.4184 (because the computer is "vergin")?

    Thank you for your feedback,

    Daniel

  • Hello

There`s an exception for Freelance licenses. You can process the upgrade without deactivating the old license but if you want to deactivate it you can go ahead.

For the upgrade process there are 2 parts:

    1. The license upgrade which can be done from your SDL account by click on the red dot "Your available upgrade" and the follow the steps from the article: https://gateway.rws.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0039975

The "Available upgrade" has nothing to do with Studio CUs, this simply notifies you that you have an upgrade available which can be processed anytime.

    2. The installation part. You can download and install Studio 2021 CU4 before doing the license upgrade and activate it after you process the actual license upgrade.

On the new computer you can install directly Studio 2021 CU4 or you can also install Studio 2019 if you still want to use it. Your choice.

    Thanks,

    Sorin

  • Hello Sorin

Thank you for the clear explanations. According to theses, I will change my plan:

    1. I will first install Trados 2020 only on the new computer 1 (replacement of the crashed computer) and then activate the corresponding fulfillment ID
    2. Then I will install Trados 2020 on the new computer 2 (replacement of the still working, but old computer) and then activate the corresponding fulfillment ID

    > This way, I can do without updating Trados 2021 on the still working, but old computer

    >> I don't need a reply from you. I will re-write you when everything is done successfully, without any unexpected surprises, I hope.

    Daniel

  • Hello

You can`t activate a fulfillment ID, that is a code generated by your computer based on which the license is activated. All you need to do to upgrade and use Studio 2021 is this:

    1. Install Studio 2021 on the computer(s) where you need to use it.

    2. Upgrade your license by going in your RWS account > Your available upgrades > Upgrade (1) > Process upgrade.

    3. This will generate a new license code which can be used to activate Studio 2021.

Ignore the reset / deactivation part for 2019 license as this is not mandatory for the type of license you have.

    Thank you,

    Sorin
