Trados 2017 issues / Setup.exe window + old files

Hello Community,

I'm a 2021 Trados Studio Freelance user. I am also not technically inclined. Bear with me.

I've upgraded from Trados 2017 to 2019 a few years ago, and more recently (6 months or so) to 2021. I am now taking the time to figure out a few 2017-related issues.

Everytime I turn on my computer, I get a "SDLTradosStudio2017_SR1\setup.exe" pop-up window. Even when I agree to the set-up installation and go through the entire process (if only to get rid of the pop-up), the same message shows up once I've restarted the computer. No idea what is going on or how to fix it.

I want to uninstall Studio 2017 to solve the entire situation (I haven't used 2017 for at least 2-3 years) but still have a number of files (TMs, projects...) saved under the main 2017 (Documents) folder. Would that have an impact on my (ongoing) TMs, termbases and projects? Would I lose anything important/useful? If I were to uninstall 2017, what should I do beforehand? (everything is backed-up, of course.)

Any suggestions/solutions would be much appreciated. If the info is available somewhere in our Community or in Trados documentation, let me know, because I can't find anything clear cut.

Thanks!

    Hi Caroline,

I'm not an RWS employee but I do have previous versions of Studio and its predecessor installed on my system so that I can process older types of file and, more importantly, help people who are still using older versions, and here is what I've found works... Edit: perform these tasks with the oldest software version first, then proceed through logically to the most recent...

When a problem occurs (e.g. after an update), the first thing to try is a Windows Repair of Studio (and corresponding MultiTerm components maybe, depending on what the problem is). This will repair software connections and check for and replace anything that is missing from the setup, for example.

    Here is how:

    1. Close all SDL applications.
    2. Open the Control Panel:
      • Windows Vista/7: Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
      • Windows 10/11: Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features
      • - or type 'Control Panel' in the search line on your bottom Windows toolbar.
    3. Click/highlight the relevant SDL product from the list (e.g. SDL Trados Studio 2021 etc) and click 'Uninstall/Change' either on the top toolbar or on the right-click dropdown menu (or just 'Repair' for MultiTerm), then select > Yes > Repair. Allow it to run. This will take longer for Studio than for the 3 main components of MultiTerm. Do NOT repair 'Remove suite of products' entries. These are only for uninstalling.
    4. Restart Studio/MultiTerm.

    There are further options here:

Repairing your installation of Trados Studio

Repairing your installation of MultiTerm Desktop

I hope this is enough to help you!

    All the best,
