I have a trouble in re-installing Trados 2015 and MultiTermbase onto my brand-new PC with Windows 11

Dear community members,

Since my PC got broken, I bought a new one with Windows 11. I tried to re-install Trados Studio 2015 and Multi Termbase by following the instructions of RWS help page. However, installation is interrupted by an error message. With the help of the support desk, I managed to install Trados Studio 2015 after adding missing modules and doing offline license activation manually. However, I did the same process to the Termbase, but it didn't work at all. The support person says there might be something wrong with Microsoft .NET Framework. I'm not sure but when I re-installed Trados 2015,I believe  Microsoft .NET Framework4.5.2 was installed in my new pc, however, when I checked it again, it was upgraded to Microsoft .NET Framework4.8.

Does the upgrade cause the problem? The support personnel says the only way to solve this issue is a version up. It is reasonable, however, since I didn't expect this problem, I'm not ready to pay for version up right after buying a new pc. Could anybody kindly suggest me other ways to try? Any suggestion is much appreciated .

Thank you, in advance!

  • If something works and meets your expectations, it doesn't matter whether it's new or old. I worked for over 10 years with Trados Studio 2009 because it's a stable and reliable tool. It worked without any problems on old computers, on new computers, with Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 10... Then I tested Trados Studio 2019 for a few days (because someone had said Trados Studio 2009 was old) and it turned out, as confirmed by numerous user reviews, that it was one big failure - constant problems with TMs, glossaries, windows closing out of nowhere, keyboard shortcuts not working, etc. I spent more time troubleshooting than translating. As there is no point in replacing a good one (old) with a worse one (new) I went back to Trados Studio 2009 and perhaps Aki doesn't fancy a newer version of Trados either. Unfortunately, these days newer usually means worse.

To some extent you are right. But if you want to use outdated software, you need outdated operating system and outdated hardware. I cannot use my QuarkXPress anymore, as Apple does not provide any PCs with Motorola processor... There is a point in life, when you need to move to new hardware. And then you must buy new software. Unfortunately this is nearly as simple as that. This is not only Trados, which does not support older versions. This is all software industry working that way.

As for your example: Trados 2019 is much better than 2015, but you need to upgrade your TMs and not use settings from the old version. Keyboard shortcuts can be adapted to whatever you want. And some of these has been simply changed over the years. They do work very well and there is no other CAT tool on the market with such a huge variety of shortcuts and the possibility to adapt them to nearly any need.
