Error Message: An error occurred whilst parsing the xml

Hello All,

I encountered an error a few days ago and could not resolve it. I've attached screenshots of the error message, and the file location on File Explorer.

I have Trados Studio 2022 on Windows 10 Platform and Microsoft 365. I encountered an issue a few days ago where the error message reads: An error occurred whilst parsing the xml. Please check whether the file at C:\Users|Noha\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL MultiTerm\MultiTerm15\WidgetSettings.xml is well formed. Since hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 1, position1.

I'd appreciate your kind help in solving the a/m error, taking into account that I can access the file (WidgetSettings.xml) in the File Explorer on Windows, but I cannot access it on Notepad.

Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Your xml file seems to have an error. The first character is not valid. open this xml in a decent editor, preferably Notepad++ (install xml extensions there) and check it for validity. It is also possible, that you will already see the wrong first character. The first character of a xml file must be the sign "lower than" (<). On top of this, you should use dedicated xml file settings, as there is no "universal" file type for xml.

I think Jerzy may have got the wrong end of the stick as I don't think you're trying to translate this file.

Please review this KB article and see if it helps?

Can I also ask that you look where you are posting as your posts easily get missed when you put them in the wrong place.  This forum you posted into relates to "Product Help Documentation"... it has nothing to do with your problem.  In this case the licensing & installation, or the MultiTerm forum would be better.  I'll move it in case you still need assistance after reviewing the KB article.

You're right, I was not translating this file. I receive this error message after logging into my operating system.

As I am still receiving it, I'll try the offered solutions.

Many thanks for your immense help and time. It's highly appreciated.

If you don't use the MultiTerm widget then maybe you should uninstall it?  I never install it as it really has no value for me at all.  Frankly I doubt it's very useful for most translators as it's more of a tool for users of a managed termbase who just need to access the terminology while working on other applications.

It is installed when you install MultiTerm, but you can uncheck it and not install it at all.

Thank you for the link to this valuable KB article. I renamed the file as per the path given in the error message, and it finally disappeared.

I agree with you here too, Paul. I don't use MultiTerm widget as well, so I unchecked it when I was installing Trados 2024.

Thank you very much for your prompt & invaluable help and time.
