Trados Studio 2021 Freelance license activation / license transfer after PC failure

I am a long-time Trados Freelance user and have owned perpetual licenses since Trados 7, upgrading through Studio 2011, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2021, and most recently Studio 2024 Freelance.

My current RWS account shows only the Trados Studio 2024 Freelance license, but I would like to install and activate Trados Studio 2021, which I previously used under a perpetual upgrade license.

My previous computer, on which Trados Studio 2021 was installed and activated, has recently crashed and is no longer accessible, so I cannot deactivate or return the license from that machine. I therefore need to transfer or reactivate my Studio 2021 license on my new computer.

It appears that my Studio 2021 license or upgrade entitlement is not visible in my account. I believe it may be part of my upgrade chain.

Could you please:

  1. Confirm that my Trados Studio 2021 Freelance perpetual license/upgrade exists in my license history,
  2. Reset or return the Studio 2021 license from the old machine,
  3. Provide the activation code or enable activation of Studio 2021 on my new computer.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

  • Hi

Thank you for contacting us. Please avoid sharing any personal information or email addresses in the group. We can locate your account using the email address you used during registration.

Please be aware that once you upgrade, your license applies only to the new version—in your case, Trados 2024. You will no longer be able to use Trados 2021, regardless of where it is installed.

    Kind regards,

  • Dear Ana,

    Thank you for your reply.

My question concerns reactivating Trados Studio 2021 on a new PC after my previous PC failed.

I did not upgrade from Trados Studio 2021. I purchased Trados Studio 2024 separately and in parallel, and I did not agree to forfeit my 2021 license.

If a 2021 license is still associated with my account, could you please advise how to return the license from the old (non-functional) PC and activate it on the new one?

    Kind regards,
    William

  • Hi ,

Actually, on the account linked to the email you are using here in Community, you purchased an Upgrade from Trados Studio 2021 Freelance Plus to Trados Studio 2024 Freelance in December 2024 - you can find the order in your RWS Account in Orders, it was placed with the reseller.

This means that you only have one license and once you processed the upgrade, the activation code generated is for Trados 2024, and Trados 2021 can no longer be activated.

Also you upgraded from Plus license to normal license, this means you no longer have the two activation fulfilments that the Trados 2021 had, but only one activation for one device.

Purchasing an Upgrade is not the same with buying a New License. I'm afraid you can no longer use Trados 2021.

    Best regards,

    Anca

  • Yes, now I remember, I was railroaded into "upgrading" to 2024 because I  was told I would have to pay the full purchase price after that. When I tried using it, I had such a terrible experience with lost work due to compatiblity problems with packages prepared by my clients that I uninstalled it immediately and went back to using 2021.

You have a very strange definition of a "perpetual license". I never would have paid for the upgrade if I had been informed, as I ought to have been, that it would result in the loss of my "perpetual license" for 2021, which should be a logical impossibility.

In any case, I hope you have finally resolved the obnoxious compatibility problems so I don't waste hours of work again.
