SDL Trados Studio 2014 SP2 stopped working from one day to the next for no reason (no really!)

Hello community,

I am new here and already in desperate need of some help (not the most unusal way to end up here I guess). It seems that over night, my SDL Trados Studio 2014 SP 2 (build 11.2.4435.12) decided to stop working altogether for no reason.

My system:

Windows 10 Pro

SDL Trados Studio 2014 SP 2 build 11.2.4435.12

Microsoft Office 365 (now collaboration between Word 365 and SDL Studio 2014 is far from smooth, but something like this - see below - has never happened before)

No updates or new software installed since the last time Studio 2014 worked successfully except an Adobe Reader DC update which I tried uninstalling - didn't help.

The problem:

Last time I used it successfully and uneventfully was last Friday. I think my last action was producing the target file of the current sdlxiff I had been working on. Nothing special, it was an existing project I have been handling a lot of files of the same type with (namely .doc files). Output was generated the way I was expecting it as well. I admit that I altered the target file doc a little and saved in Word, but that has never created a problem before.

Today I tried to start my SDL Trados Studio. It behaves as if it starts up: the little blue square logging the processing and loading tasks is shown and disappears, as usual, but then: nothing. The main window never shows up, I cannot retrieve it by clicking on the symbol in the task bar, when I hover my cursor over the symbol all I see is a mockup/reduced version of the main window that I cannot make visible (see attached pic). Trying to jumpstart the program by opening an SDL project from the SDL directory doesn't do a thing (it actually tells me that this project is already loaded in SDL).

So in short: the programme thinks it's alive and kicking and running as usual while it is not at all. No error messages, no nothing. I have NO clue what is happening (and why now!! With all those pending translation jobs! :((( )

What I've tried so far:

- Reboot my computer: didn't change a thing (repeatedly, also after each of the following steps)

- Uninstall SDL from my computer, download the setup exe again and reinstall from scratch: didn't change a thing

- Uninstall the last unrelated software update on my computer (Adobe Reader DC): didn't change a thing

- Restart related services (Nalpeiron Control Service, Nalpeiron Licensing Service, SDL Trados Studio 2014 SP 2 Customer Feedback Service): didn't change a thing

Can anybody help me in my moment of despair? Does this ring a bell with anybody, does anybody know what might be going on? I'm at my wit's end :(

Thank you very much in advance,

Susanne

  • Hi Susanne,

I think you should try a reset and this doesn't help log a case. Rename this folder (just add _old to the end or something, it's not important what you rename it to) and restart Studio:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\11.0.0.0

This often resolves a multitude of problems so try that, and if it doesn't help please log a case. For licensing or installation issues that prevent you from working we have a route for all customers to get help. This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

    http://support.xl8.one

Just fill in the form and submit it. Make sure your email address is entered correctly or nobody will be able to get back in touch with you.

    Regards
