Billing of untranslated repetitions

I have a question about the statistics pane in Passolo.

Say I get a file with these statistics:

Translation Statistics
To be translated 12'444 Words
Untranslated 5'406 Words
Untranslated Repetitions 6'696 Words
Translated and validated 342 Words

How am I supposed to bill that?

Yes, straightforward answer is you bill the 5406 untranslated words.
But what about the untranslated repetitions?
How should they get billed? If I only charge the number of ''untranslated strings'' (i.e. the number of strings that have to be translated, without repetitions, see below), who translates the ''Untranslated Repetitions'' and how should they get billed?

Passolo help sections says:

Total number of strings ''to be translated''
= The number of strings that have to be translated, including repetitions. 12444

Number of ''untranslated strings''
= The number of strings that have to be translated, without repetitions. 5406

Number of ''untranslated, repeated strings'' 6696
= The number of strings that have to be translated but occur again somewhere else so that they can be translated using the pre-translation or replicate functions.

Having a brain meltdown, can someone please chime in? Cheers.

  • Hi Andrea,

That's an interesting question. The answer usually depends on the contract you have with your client, but generally speaking repetitions are not billed UNLESS some context is provided to warrant reviewing translation for repetitions, or some dialog fixes to be done.

If you set Translation Assistant to "pretranslate" for untranslated strings by going to File, Options, Translation Assistant, when you get to one of the repetitions, it will be pretranslated with the translation you did before (the first instance of the repetitions, which is part of untranslated word count).

Trados Studio Options window with Translation Assistant settings. 'Pretranslate' option is selected for untranslated strings.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I am happy to help.

    Thanks,

    Naoko

  • Thank you so much Naoko. So, basically, if i understand you correctly and taking the example above:

Once the 5406 ''untranslated words'' are translated, Passolo will have taken care automatically of the 6696 ''untranslated, repeated words''. Correct?

  • Hi Andrea,

Yes Passolo will take care of all the repetitions, but the order in which untranslated and repetitions will be taken care of is not linear. You will be translating untranslated strings and you will come across repetitions, at which point they will be pretranslated by Passolo pretranslate.

As you already mentioned in your original post, there is a separate feature called replicate. In using this feature, you will actually translate all untranslated strings first, while repetitions are all locked from editing.

After you are done translating all untranslated strings, using Replicate feature, you will translate repetitions at once, and you won't be interacting with each repetition strings.

I do think replicate feature is not possible to enable in tbulic files. It needs to be enabled at .lpu level using non-translator edition of Passolo.

    Thanks,
    Naoko
