How to uninstall MS Word Grammar Checker?

I downloaded and installed MS Word Grammar Checker a week or so ago.

I have Studio 2017 and MS Office 365, running on a Windows 10 x64 platform.

I find the plugin slows down confirmation of my segments considerably, and isn't particularly helpful. All the warnings say is "!!!". I have disabled the plugin, but am still getting the useless "!!!" warnings. I want to uninstall it, but it doesn't show up on the plugin management tool. I can't find a folder for it under Users, so I can't delete the folders. It doesn't show up under my PC's Apps setting, either. How do I get rid of this thing?

  • Okay, I just tried the plugin manager again, and found the plugin and uninstalled it. I could swear it wasn't there when I tried before. Maybe I just didn't see it. Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Paul,

I have run into the same problem but the Plugin manager cannot help as it says that Studo is open. Which, as far as I can see, is not the case:

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Best regards,

    P.

  • I don't know how you initiated the plugin manager.  But I would do the following:

    1. Close Studio

    2. Press the windows key and type "plugin manager"

If that doesn't work then I imagine a restart of your cmputer would cure the issue as it's most probably a temporary glitch with windows hanging onto a process somewhere...

Or, just delete the application from the plugins folders.

Manually remove the plugin from all of these locations, if it’s in there:
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15\Plugins\Packages\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15\Plugins\Unpacked\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15\Plugins\Packages\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15\Plugins\Unpacked\
    c:\ProgramData\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15\Plugins\Packages\
    c:\ProgramData\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15\Plugins\Unpacked\

  • Hi Paul,

    1. Restarting the computer did the job, thanks!

    2. On a different note, it seems that almost every time I download and install a plugin from the SDL AppStore (and I have downloaded less than 10 top-rated plugins at different times) I run into serious problems with Studio's functionality.

I am not sure what the correct approach should be here, but it seems that for a complex suite of products like Studio (which at any given time has a number of issues on its own) SDL should not be allowing outside developers to offer plugins which more often than not mess things up and on occasion are also difficult to deinstall.

    Best regards,

    P.

    Hi Pavel,

It would be more helpful if you could elaborate a little?  We do test every plugin that is released onto the store to make sure they work and that they don't cause problems. Admittedley this is fairly superficial testing as we can't possible test the influence of every plugin with every combination of plugins and other 3rd party software a user is working with.  But if you can be more specific we can always investigate and try to resolve the problems.

If you are mainly referring to the Grammar Checker... we're well aware of the problems with the grammar checker and if it was just my decision I would have removed it from the store a long time ago.  But despite the issues, that we cannot resolve (there is no public API for Microsoft Grammar and the plugin is a hack) many people would still like to use it and find value in it.  So we have left it there.

What plugins have given you problems and have you aproached the developers?
