DeepL API Key invalid

This forum might be more appropriate; I asked the same question in the MT forum.

My DeepL API Key is not accepted.

Perhaps I have purchased the wrong DeepL product? I have the DeepL API (free) - I want to try out DeepL

  • We can't help with this at the moment as we don't have a valid key for testing with.  We have asked the DeepL team but they are not responding so any work we were doing on this plugin is currently on hold.

Once we have a key we'll pick it up again.  I suggest you email the DeepL team about this.

  • Same problem here, same screen. Is there any solution available? I contacted DeepL support today, no answer yet.

The problem is not the free API, I purchase the Pro (paid) one, same result. And another translator, also DeepL Pro client had the same result.

    Any solution from your end?

  • make sure you have the latest plugin installed. If you still have the problem after that it may well be something the DeepL team need to resolve. We have experienced this ourselves and they needed to make a change in their admin console.

  • I discovered the problem.

On the main page of the plugin documentation, it is mentioned that "This plugin provides machine translation results from the DeepL Translator found here - https://www.deepl.com/translator."

This is currently wrong (maybe right in the past, I don't know). DeepL plans that can be used on CAT tools are on this page, https://www.deepl.com/pro?cta=header-prices/, the two plans at the right on the table (Advanced or Ultimate). This information needs to be more explicit on the plugin's page.

I emailed DeepL customer support and their answer was this:

"Unfortunately, you will need a DeepL Pro Advanced or Ultimate subscription to use DeepL in a CAT tool. The term "API key" in the plugin for Trados Studio is unfortunately a little bit misleading. We are already in touch with RWS to correct this term (as this plugin is developed by RWS and not us). What they require here is an authentication key, which will be provided to you with a DeepL Pro Advanced or Ultimate subscription. This authentication key is for CAT tool use only.

As you have chosen DeepL Pro API plan, we would like to offer you to cancel your current plan for you with immediate effect. You would then be able to resubscribe to a DeepL Pro Advanced or Ultimate plan with your account. Would that be okay? Please note that we are only offering a free trial for Starter and Advanced subscriptions. So if you would like to test DeepL Pro first, we would recommend you a DeepL Pro Advanced plan."

    So that was the problem.

  • Quite interesting... nobody from DeepL has spoken to us yet.  But we do say this:

I do think it's clear from this you need to have an API key from DeepL.  And if I look at the DeepL site it shows this:

Plenty of mention of an API and the only reason I'm mentioning this is because the term "Authentication" doesn't appear anywhere.  I somehow feel that using a new term would confuse even more users than are confused now!

Can you tell me what confused you?  When I look at their pricing page it shows this table:

I think this is also fairly clear.

But I would be happy to make any changes to our plugin that will help ensure less confusion.

  • I have also updated our wiki page here:

Hopefully that will also help a bit.

  • The problem is when I was searching DeepL's website, there is an API tab (top part of the image) with these plans:

It provides an API key, the same way Google Cloud provides a Google Translate API key.

This is what DeepL's customer support mentioned, and I know another translator that chose the same plan under the same idea I had. I think this information needs to be explicit on the plugin webpage, don't you think? That the plan is NOT on the API tab, but on the Plans and Pricing tab.
