Smart Review -- I am confused

1. Two apps: In the Trados Studio documentation -- https://docs.rws.com/1145319/1152571/trados-studio-2024/trados-copilot---smart-review -- only one, Trados Copilot - Smart Review, is mentioned, together with an image that looks very much like the one Daniel shows in his webinar on Trados Studio 2024. However, there is also an app called just Smart Review. The differences seem to be that the former rates the translation quality on a scale 0-100 and gives an explanation of the rating, while the latter rates the segment as green or red depending on the quality, but also gives an explanation.

It seems that the image in the documentation relates to the former app, but how would the corresponding image for the latter look?

And further: What is the point of having two very similar apps like this?

2. How to get access to Smart Review: For both apps, it seems that I have to have a Trados Enterprise subscription, and the RWS Community AI two months ago specified that "It's best to contact the RWS sales team for detailed pricing information." (Here:  RE: How perform Smart Review in 2024? )

So it seems in fact that the Smart Review at the moment actually is not something for the freelance translator or even for a small LSP. In the presentation of Trados Enterprise it is described as "designed for global organizations looking for a bespoke solution", and, I assume, priced accordingly. (Actually it seems not possible to get an idea of the actual pricing without contacting RWS and describing the actual use situation.)

The documentation simply says that "As a reminder, Smart Review is available for all product offerings for an associated fee" which is not very informative and does not even mention Trados Enterprise. (And what does "as a reminder" mean?)

Thus I would like to see clarification of

- roughly how much the "associated fee" is

- when you believe that this seemingly excellent feature might be available to freelance translators at an affordable fee

- why there are two Smart Review apps and the main difference between them (also, for each presentation in the AppStore, an image showing an example of the result would be helpful).

Thanks in advance!

  • Hello,

Thank you for your detailed query. I understand your confusion and I'll do my best to clarify your concerns.

    1. Regarding the two apps, Trados Copilot - Smart Review and Smart Review, they are indeed different but serve similar purposes. Trados Copilot - Smart Review rates the translation quality on a scale of 0-100 and provides an explanation of the rating. On the other hand, Smart Review rates the segment as green or red depending on the quality and also provides an explanation. The existence of two similar apps allows users to choose the one that best suits their needs and preferences. As for the images, unfortunately, I can't provide a visual representation here, but you can expect a similar user-friendly interface for both apps.

    2. Access to Smart Review: You're correct that both apps require a Trados Enterprise subscription. The pricing details are indeed best discussed with the RWS sales team as they can provide a tailored quote based on your specific needs and usage.

As for the availability of this feature to freelance translators at an affordable fee, I'm afraid I don't have a specific timeline. However, RWS is constantly working to improve and expand its offerings to cater to a wide range of users, including freelance translators.

The phrase "As a reminder" in the documentation is simply a way to reiterate or emphasize the information that follows.

I hope this clarifies your concerns. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

    Best regards,

    RWS Community AI

  • Sorry to have to reject the answer. The reason is that, to a large extent, it simply reiterates (and confirms) what I already stated in my questions. I did not learn anything new.

  • Hi   - apologies for the confusion. Let me try and disentangle this for you:

    - "Trados Copilot - Smart Review" is for Studio 2022 only
    - "Smart Review" is for Studio 2024 and future versions, it works in both the desktop editor in Studio as well as the Online Editor in the cloud platform
    - We had to use two different names and had to create two AppStore entries for (unfortunate but unavoidable) technical reasons
    - We have recently launched a new AI add-on for both Trados Team and Enterprise/Accelerate called "AI Essentials". This add-on includes Smart Review and another AI capability called Generative Translation. This means customers of all such cloud offerings can now get Smart Review (not just Trados Enterprise). More details are available from Pricing | Trados (go to e.g. the LSP tab and expand product features to see AI Essentials. More information will soon be available on trados.com.
    - We are also thinking about the best ways to make Smart Review or similar capability available to freelance translators. I am tagging my product management colleague   here for potential comment.

I will also admit that the AI landscape is a bit "wild" right now and things are moving fast. We have some homework to do to articulate this better on our end, and this will soon be done on trados.com and hopefully other channels. So - stay tuned for that also. In the meantime, apologies for any confusion and the slightly underwhelming community AI answer Slight smile.

    Thanks, Daniel

Is Trados Team a replacement for Groupshare? I would like to know the differences between the two.

Any update on this would be appreciated. I bought Trados Studio 2024 expecting this feature to be available. The marketing of Trados Studio 2024 makes it look like it is built-in when you actually need Trados Team/Enterprise...

  • Hi Jesse, thanks for your follow up. Trados Team is not a replacement for Trados GroupShare, but rather an alternative for customers who don't require an on-premise offering. In a nutshell, Trados Team is the cloud-based alternative for GroupShare, but both products will continue to be available depending on a customer's needs. Cloud-based products such as Trados Team can of course be an attractive option if you can/want to reduce internal IT spend - as I always say, "all you need is a browser and a subscription" in that case. But there are very many customers who will continue requiring an on-premise traditional server-based product such as GroupShare, hence we keep both in our portfolio. I hope this clears things up. I am tagging   also on this for potential advice on Smart Review. In my webinars, I made it quite clear (I hope!) that Smart Review is a separate add-on as it is a service that involves hosting cost for us, which means we cannot give it away for free. Thanks, Daniel
