Adobe InDesign users: How to extract text for import/alignment?

Hello,

My company has some IDML file pairs that we'd like to leverage to our TMs. Is there any method/script/paid plugin that successfully extracts text to word/excel?

Thank you.

  • Also, we are aware of the script ExportAllStories.jsx but that creates 1000s of txt files with single lines of text.

Alternatively, if anyone also knows ways to split IDML files into more workable sizes, we could align them. As of now, the IDMLs are too massive to be aligned without lags.

  • Hi ,

I don't have any experience of this but in the absence of another response, perhaps you could use the XML export from InDesign? I don't know how many files you have but maybe this will be a little easier to handle especially as you could split them if needed?

  • Thanx for your response Paul. I'll give that a try. The best option in lui of a response has been to put both language pairs into trados and then export both of them as excel using the plugin. Then they can either be aligned manually (though alignment gets laggy with large files) or, if the pairs are balanced nicely, can be fixed a bit in excel as a bilingual file and then imported using bilingual excel. Also, by tweaking the "file types" settings to filter out IDML meta data junk, then using the advanced filter to filter out "numbers only" and repetions keeping first occurances only then locking out those things, manuals and catalogs with only unique pairs. Only problem is the segmentation and line breaks of Japanese doesn't match english so I'm left fixing some missing pairs. But is the best option now. Will try to export an xml tho.
