Hello,
I'd like to get some idea what Grammar checkers people are using for checking German grammar.
As far as I can see, grammar checking tools for English work fairly well by now, but I have yet to find the tool that can actually deal with German grammar.
Here are some examples:
1) MS Word Grammar check - quite erratic, many false positives. If you were to let this automatically correct your text, you'd find yourself in the creative writing business, but not in translation anymore.
Word can't find anything wrong with the grammar, but it obviously has "Meteorologen" and "Kongress" in its dictionary, so it suggests writing "Meteorologenkongress" in two words, which is wrong.
2) Language Tool - seems to be less prone to false positives, but often does not understand German cases.
(LT marked up two words, suggesting that "Internationale" should be lower case unless it's part of a name. Correct, but it is part of a name here. It also suggests Meteorologen Kongress instead of Meteorologenkongress, which is still wrong.)
3) Duden Mentor - This started out as a very interesting tool, but many false positives. Then they must have blunted it a lot to reduce the number of false positives, but it hardly finds any mistakes anymore.
None of the three grammar checkers found the three blatant mistakes in the text. They don't have to be perfect, but this is a perfect waste of time. Any 5th grader could identify these mistakes. Does anybody know of a too that works satisfactorily?
Daniel
