Any custom xml filetype template I can try for WordPress xliff files

Dear colleagues,

My partner and I are about to work on a project that contains the notorious WP xliff files where everything is dumped in one segment mixed with translatable and non-translatable items.

With the help of another professional, we came up with a workaround that involves hiding the untranslatable items in the exported bilingual Studio Word file, taking the translatable text to create a new Studio file, pasting the translated target column to the bilingual file, and update the xliff file from the bilingual Word file.

This seems to be a good option, but I wonder if creating a custom xml filetype would be a better and safer option, since I wouldn't need to worry about not being able to import the bilingual file back to Studio.  Are there any xml filetype templates available that I can try and see if it would allow me to work on these xliff files directly within Studio?  I came across an article by Paul about how to create a custom xml filetype, but it seems rather complicated...

Thank you in advance for your input.

  • Yes I agree. I looked at my custom xml filetype in notepad (despite in one line) and it didn't make much sense.
I am going to do this exercise again following your video. I should be able to come up with the xml file that works for all the files not just one. I could have already done it, but might have not actually used the xml file because I was looking in the wrong place.
Anyway, time to re-test. Thank you again for all of your help!

  • Hi Paul,

I finally successfully created an xml filetype that works for the xliff files which only have source text.
But there seems to be a new problem. For the xliff files the client sent that already have outdated Chinese text on target side when opening in Studio, now these files are opened in Studio (via single file translation method) with the Chinese text on source side.
I first tried disabling the custom xml filetype under File>Options>filetypes, which failed; then I removed the xml filetype completely under File>Options (I can't remove the xml filetype in Project Settings because Studio wouldn't let me saying it's being used). Without this filetype, the xliff file still opens with target text on the source. Somehow it seems the xml filetype still has the effect, even though I don't see it listed in File>Options>filetypes.
How do I solve this problem so that the files with Chinese text can be opened normally in Studio.
    Thank you.
