I am trying to export a translated file (just a word document) and keep getting the same error message, which begins 'SDL XLIFF validation error at line 253 offset 113511...'

Can you open the SDLXLIFF file for translation (from the files view in Studio)? If yes, go then to Project settings, click on File types, SDLXLIFF, General and swithc the "VAlidate SDLIXLIFF" you find there off.
If not, I'm afraid your SDLXLIFF file has been damaged and you will need to retranslate the source file from your TM.
