More detailed wordcount?

Hi all

I work with a client that usually instructs me to ignore 100% and repetitions, and never confirm 100% nor the repetitions.

This generally is not a problem, but when I work with longer jobs that have thousands of segments with all sorts of different segment statuses, I find it hard to keep track of my progress.

The wordcount shown in the status bar has only New, Draft, Confirmed, and Signed-off. However, depending on the job my client may or may not have the 100% matches confirmed, and auto-translated segments are also lumped into draft (it really shouldn't, IMO) so the draft count is more often than not a completely garbage stat for me.

Is there a way to properly count words in an ongoing job? At the very minimum it needs to differentiate bewteen real draft and unconfirmed repetitions, and preferably also auto-translated segments. I would even settle for just a report that is capable of listing all the different segment statues that exist in my opened files and sum them up individually.

As it stands, trying to gauge progress on bigger jobs is pure guesswork, and it's both annoying and frustrating.

Does your idea can work for that ? The real file should be complex (OR not..). Don nou..

For example... if I extend my test file to include some AT segments and take the same approach with the Advanced Display Filter:

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing a list of text segments with some labeled as 'AT' and others showing 100% match, indicating repetitions and locked categories.

Then I can report as follows:

Screenshot of a Trados Studio report detailing segments, words, characters, and placeables with various confirmation levels such as 'Draft' and 'AT', and match types like 'ContextMatch'.

I'm now only seeing one AT segment as the rest are repetitions and in the locked category.  But as I said... this is still a simplistic example.

  • Thanks all for the suggestions.

Unfortunately, there are already locked segments that I mustn't touch, including unlocking them, or locking additional segments. If I lock those repetitions and run the report, the files will be closed and reopened, and I don't think I'll be able to easily restore the original locked segments and unlock the ones I locked.

Well, it's not absolutely necessary that I get a solution, it's just been bothering me for the past 3-4 years.

Fortunately, any job that is large enough for this to be an annoyance will also always have enough time allocated, so it doesn't have any serious implications.

Oh wait, I suppose I can make a backup and just restore the backup after getting the report. I think we have a good enough solution!
