Do you just need to show whitespace characters?

In the Find and Replace dialog box, CTRL + SHIFT + SPACE doesn't work. Instead, you can type ALT+0160 (ALT key and the 4 digits typed from the numerical pad).

ALT+0160 seems to a regular space, but it really is a non-breaking space. You can prove it by clicking on the Find or Replace buttons to search/replace.

the white space characters sign is on. if I just want to insert non-breaking space through "ctrl shift space", that works fine... however if I want to do it with "replace" function and replace all the possible spaces with nonbreaking ones, what happens is...the function detects the space but when I choose option "replace", it doesnt insert the nonbreaking space (in form of $1 = dollar sign, number one, nonbreaking space), it leaves the space as it is.

ctrl shift space works fine. 

CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE works fine in the Editor, but it doens't work in the Find and Replace dialog box.

Instead of CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE, please type ALT+0160 in Find and Replace dialog box. Please read my post below.

since I have a laptop, I am unable to insert this shortcut in the dialog box or the text itself. 

Copy & paste it from the text in Studio.

OK, then you can copy a non-breaking space from the editor, for example.

Alternatively and if you use AutoHotkey, you can use this script to be able to insert a non-breaking space anywhere in Trados with the usual shortcut CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE:
