Default template issue -

I have this exact error message coming up. I've tried the recommended path of changing the default template file name to force it to reset, and removed all other default templates - but am still getting exact same error message.
Means I can't open a new project, so Studio mostly useless.

The default language pairs are not even ones I use - Japanese!! - what am I supposed to do??

    Hello,

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with the default template in Trados Studio. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve the problem:

**Step 1:** Ensure Trados Studio is closed.

**Step 2:** Navigate to the templates folder based on your version of Trados Studio:

    - For Studio 2017: `C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\Studio 2017\Project Templates`

    - For Studio 2019: `C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\Studio 2019\Project Templates`

    - For Studio 2021: `C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\Studio 2021\Project Templates`

    - For Studio 2022: `C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\Studio 2022\Project Templates`

**Step 3:** Locate the file named `Default.sdltpl` and rename it (e.g., to `old_Default.sdltpl`).

**Step 4:** Restart Trados Studio. This should automatically recreate the `Default.sdltpl` file.

**Step 5:** After the new default template is created, try to create a new project again.

If you continue to encounter the same error, please provide the exact error message you are seeing and the version of Trados Studio you are using. This information will help in diagnosing the issue further.

  • It's Studio 24, and the error message is the exact one in the link, "Cannot apply a default project template. Your version of Trados Studio enables you to created projects in up to three target languages"
I've tried the recreate Default.sdltpl option as suggested but still getting same error message. This is not working!

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

I understand that you're still facing the error message regarding the default project template in Trados Studio 24. Let's try to resolve this step by step:

**Step 1:** Ensure Trados Studio is completely closed.

**Step 2:** Navigate to the templates folder for Trados Studio 24:

    `C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\Studio 2022\Project Templates`

**Step 3:** Locate the file named `Default.sdltpl` and delete it. This will ensure that the application recreates a fresh default template.

**Step 4:** Restart Trados Studio. Upon reopening, a new `Default.sdltpl` file should be automatically created.

**Step 5:** After the new default template is created, try to create a new project again.

If you continue to encounter the same error, please check the following:

    - Ensure that you are not exceeding the limit of three target languages in your project settings.

    - Go to **File > Setup > Project Templates** and verify that the default template does not have any unwanted language pairs listed. Remove any that you do not need.

If the issue persists, consider resetting Trados Studio's basic settings by renaming the relevant folders as mentioned in previous responses. This can help clear any corrupted settings that might be causing the problem.

If you can start Studio, go to File -> Options -> Editor -> Languages and setup there the language pair you use the most. Confirm.

Now go to File -> Setup -> Project templates and remove all from there, leaving just one you never used. Then click "Import" and go to this folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio18\ProjectTemplates
Import the Default one from there and maybe SDL Trados. Declare one of these to be the default one and now remove the last one which could not be previously removed. Restart Studio.

    This should help.
