When trying to add an idml file I get the error message "Not created in InDesign CS4".

Question

I've ticked the box for processing unsupported versions, but that doesn't help. I use Studio 2014 SP2. The ad agency says the file comes from CS4 and other files from them have worked OK in the past. Any ideas or useful experience? Thanks!

Have you done this before creating your project? So check the box in File -> Options as opposed to Project Settings? It's too late once the file is already an sdlxliff.

Hi John, If it's an existing Project then you need to check the box in the Project Settings for that project. Does that make a difference? You could also verify the file if you have this checked in File -> Options by using Ctrl+Shift+O to open the file as a new single file project. This will use the default project template settings that are controlled through File -> Options (unless you changed the default project templates). Regards Paul

Perhaps the content is coming from other sources? Or perhaps you need to tweak the filetype setting to make sure you are extracting wherever the text is coming from? Or perhaps it's just using something that is not supported, so checking the box allows the file to open as it no longer checks the version inside the metadata of the IDML but still doesn't have a clue about the structure of the file? 
 
If you can't find the solution with the settings I'd be happy to take a look with Studio 2015 and just see whether this is the difference?

 I think it's as I suggested, you need to know where the data is to be able to extract it. I wanted to check with InDesign but I don't have a copy and my Adobe account seems to have failed me... so I gave up and just played with the settings. I can extract hundreds of lines using different options in here:
