Hi, Kendall. Yes: If the authoring bridge is connected to the same Tridion Docs instance as the file you're viewing in author mode, then you should be able to see the image.
I see the error message when I'm doing something out of the ordinary -- like opening a local copy of a file (rather than checking out) for troubleshooting purposes.

Eh... I don't know why, but I now see image preview in oxygen. I don't know what changed...
