Within SDL LiveContent 2014 the communication between the app server and the batch server happens through the BackgroundTask component. This component handles any request you want to handle on a different machine (batch server) and ensures that the information is provided to the respective batch server (through the database).

Configuring multiple batch servers is done by setting up multiple servers and give them each a specific background task role or setup multiple servers which are monitoring the same background task role.
