Application to make a Project Secure

Hi all,

I was reading a post on ProZ this evening from a user who wanted to know what tools were available to make Studio sucure for a particular client.  In the past her client required her to "work on it using either a completely offline computer or else a "virtual machine" setup that creates almost the same effect within my regular system, plus encryption."

This is quite interesting and is something I've seen come up before from some customers... often requiring security in the event the computer is stolen or lost.

This got me thinking about an application that could manage this, maybe by doing something like this:

  1. Copy the Project and all associated resources to a password encrypted file on the computer.
  2. Remove the original from the computer and also the entry in the Projects xml
  3. Restore the Project

So, just a basic idea that still required the translator to remember to do this, but at least it would provide some kind of mechanism for additional security for anyone who wanted it.

Do you think this is feasible, or can you think of a better way to tackle it?

Regards

  • Hi Paul,

Are we saying we want transparent encryption at rest for Studio project files? If so, there are plenty of off-the-shelf options out there for transparent on-disk encryption already that would do this for users without any extra effort on their (or our) part.

I'd be wary of anyone coming along saying they have a really good app to do this specifically for Studio projects, simply because it's so hard to get encryption totally right, so there's a really good chance of there being a bug in there that would seriously affect the offering.

  • Hi Rob,

Old post... and if I'm honest I have not come across this requirement ever since!  I imagine there are still some organisations who would be interested in this, or in making it work in a smart way and without the translator having to do anything other than close their project.

Using third part utilities would never work because it would require too much effort on the part of the user... for this to work it would have to be seamless and effortless.
