Enhance file tize limits

Hi, you can only add files in a project not bigger than 20 MB or, for Powerpoint file, 400 MB. This is two low. We get PPTX file that are much bigger (over 1 GB, sometimes 20 GB, because there are many pictures).

The suggestion from support to split the files is time consuming. The alternative is to create a project, take the sdlxliff file and create a new project with only the SDLXLIFF file and save it to the cloud. By opening the file in Studio, the program will ask for the original file but you can dismiss the request. At the end you need to copy the translated sdlxliff file to the first project and generate the target file. This is also time consuming, but lesser then to split the file in 10 or 20 files.

Thanks,

Angelo

  • Thanks Angelo - I recently discovered the option "compress pictures" which typically brings the file size back down to reasonable sizes without affecting picture quality. Perhaps that is an option in such cases, But we should also watch these limits and potentially relax them where required. Tagging   on this as well as an FYI. Thanks, Daniel

  • Thanks  . I know there is this feature in Powerpoint. But what am I going to do after a recreate the target file? I cannot "decompress" the images to their original quality and I cannot surely send the file back to the client with their images compressed. Support told me to spli the file when I asked. The file was more then 2 GBs and I had to split it in 9 parts (135 slides(!)) and then reassemble the file. And this I had to do it with try and test, because some slide have more images and other less. I cannot just split the whole file in 9 parts with the same nomber of slides.
With SDLXLIFF files I can split quickly with Studio Views, but this is AFTER the PPT has been converted to SDLXLIFF. My workaround was to create one project wiht the original PPT, create a second project only with the SDLXLIFF file. In that way I could save the project to the cloud. Of course, when I open the file in Studio it asks me to search for the PPT file. I can ignore this. At the end we will put the SDXLIFF file back to the first project and create the target file. The option to split or compress does not work for me.

    Kind regards,

    Angelo

  • Yes agreed - it's really a topic of what I call "get it right at the source" - i.e. your client should really get this right at the source and compress the pictures as best practice before they send it to localization. It makes no good sense to send GB sized files to a translation supply chain. But I know that many clients are also a bit "beratungsresistent"... I am still curious - what would be the file size after compressing the pictures? It was a game changer for me recently (with no visual deterioration) hence I am wondering if this can help (of course best at your client's, not you). Thanks, Daniel
